NORWAY (WGME)– A young girl is recovering at home, after being hit in the crosswalk of a busy downtown Norway intersection. School officials say the child suffered minor injuries and a possible concussion. Witnesses say she was with her friend and her friend’s grandmother when she was hit.

“It’s chaotic. I’ve seen full grown adults almost get hit walking through that crosswalk”, says Francesca, who lives near the school. She told us off camera she saw a driver hit the little girl in the crosswalk of this busy Norway intersection Wednesday afternoon.

Francesca “The flashing lights were going off and he just continued to speed through.”Brad Rogers “And hit the little girl.”Francesca “Yes. And he was being yelled at by a couple of different pedestrians to slow down.”

Neighbors say before and after school, a crossing guard and police are posted at the crosswalk in front of Guy E. Rowe elementary school. But the principal says the crosswalk where the girl was hit– 50 yards down the street– is off school property, so there is no crossing guard.

Brad Rogers “This seems like a recipe for disaster.”Darrell Thibodeau/Lives By Crosswalk “Oh, yeah. There’s been a couple accidents.”Brad Rogers “Why wouldn’t you have a crossing guard here?”Darrell Thibodeau “Your guess is as good as mine.”

We heard from parents, who say the school must do more to protect kids crossing this busy road. We also reached out to MaineDOT about why there’s not a stoplight here or a 3-way stop with flashing stop signs. We’ve not heard back from them yet.

Now, there are warning lights to alert traffic coming in this direction and in this direction that someone is about to cross here. But for drivers heading west on Paris Street, they may see the crosswalk sign. But there’s no way they can see these flashing lights coming from that direction.

“This intersection is really dangerous”, says Kit Richards, who works in downtown Norway. “People are just flying through here and they’re not paying attention. These are very important lives to protect.”

“You got little kids crossing”, says Darrell Thibodeau. “It’s ridiculous.”

No word from police if any charges were filed against the driver.
