The Ukrainian World Congress (UWC) welcomes the outcome of the October 20 constitutional referendum in Moldova. This historic decision marks a significant step towards anchoring Moldova’s future within the EU’s political and economic framework.

“This outcome represents a victory not only for Moldova but for Europe and Ukraine as well. It stands as a strong rebuttal to Russia’s attempts to undermine the democratic process through disinformation, propaganda, and cyber warfare. A democratic, sovereign, and European Moldova is vital for Ukraine’s security, and together with the EU, we will be more resilient,” stated UWC President Paul Grod.

Reports indicate that Russia attempted to interfere in both the presidential election and the referendum through tactics such as vote buying and spreading fear about EU membership via social media. Despite these challenges, the referendum succeeded, bolstered by the support of Moldovans living abroad in the EU, USA, and Canada.

“The overwhelming backing for Moldova’s EU aspirations from the global Moldovan diaspora highlights the crucial role that a diaspora can play in shaping the democratic future of their homeland. We extend our best wishes to Moldova and its people on their journey toward European integration. We support the pro-Ukrainian and pro-European position of President Maia Sandu as she prepares for the upcoming runoff election against pro-Kremlin candidate Alexandr Stoianoglo on November 3,” added President Grod.
