Scorers: Martin-Prieto 89′ ;Alidou 49′

Canada Women held reigning World Champions Spain to a 1-1 draw in Almendralejo as Marine-Yasmine Alidou and Cristina Martin-Prieto found the net.

Spain, who won the World Cup in 2023, dominated possession and had the majority of the efforts on goal but could not find a breakthrough in a relatively one-sided first half.

But just minutes after the break they found themselves behind courtesy of Alidou, who had only come on as a halftime substitute.

Being found on the edge of the Spain penalty area from a Canada break, she took her time before finding the bottom corner with exquisite precision to grab her first senior goal in just her third cap.

It proved to be Canada’s only shot on target of the game, but it almost proved decisive as they held on against Spain after normal service resumed in the wake of the goal, with Spain racking up a massive 30 shots, 10 of those on target.

But in the 89th minute, their hearts were broken as Cristina Martin-Prieto was left unmarked in the six yard box to thunder home a header and level the game in the dying stages with Spain’s tenth effort on target.
