The State of Massachusetts is Launching a New Quantum Computing Complex with a total of $16 Million in Cash and In-Kind Funding

A Quantum Computing Complex located at the Massachusetts Green High Performance Computing Center (MGHPCC) in Holyoke, Massachusetts will be created with $5 million in funding from the Massachusetts state government and an additional $11 million in in-kind funding from QuEra. The project is a two-year, $16 million initiative aimed at deploying a state-of-the-art neutral atom quantum computer at the complex. The complex will serve as a hub for quantum research and innovation, enabling open-access research, hands-on training, and career development opportunities across the state, especially in sectors such as biomedical research and financial services.

QuEra’s matching funds will allow MGHPCC to integrate quantum computing with its existing infrastructure, including platforms like the New England Research Cloud. This integration will provide academic researchers and the open-source community with access to cutting-edge quantum computing resources, fostering breakthroughs in algorithm development and hardware innovation. The project aligns with Massachusetts’ broader efforts to lead in quantum technology, following previous investments in quantum research at local universities.

State and industry leaders expressed optimism about the complex’s potential to transform various sectors, promote economic growth, and attract top talent. The initiative is expected to position Massachusetts as a quantum computing hub, driving technological advancements and expanding the state’s competitive edge in emerging technologies.
