Today, the UN General Assembly elected Czechia for the period 2025-2027 by a majority of 166 votes. Czechia’s membership of the Council expired in 2023. The renewed membership is an affirmation of the priority position of human rights in Czech foreign policy, which is in line with the Government’s Programme Statement of January 2022. The membership, which will begin on 1 January 2025, will be the fifth in a row.

“This is great news and underlines how fundamental human rights are to Czech foreign policy. Today’s election of Czechia to the UN Human Rights Council is also a gift on the occasion of the late President Václav Havel’s 88th birthday,” Foreign Minister Jan Lipavský said after the successful candidacy.

The main priorities of the Czech membership will be to submit further resolutions on freedom of assembly and association and equal participation. Czechia will continue to support civil societies, NGOs, human rights defenders and journalists. The focus will be on the human rights situation in Russia and Belarus.
