The y-axis represents the difference between Harris’s and Trump’s numbers. Hence, 0.04 represents a 4% lead by Harris, and negative points represent Trump leading (Harris-Trump meaning Harris minus Trump). I generated the plot using matplotlib in Python, and FiveThirtyEight data was used as the source. Only the first and last data points are plotted for each polling firm. Only polls with at least one data point during the previous 17 days and at least two total polls are considered. For each polling firm and date, the polls are averaged for that given date. Also, given that polls are conducted in a date range, the midpoint is considered the polling date for plotting.
So when I see a series go from .04 to .005, what does that mean?
