  1. Brendan Hughes, the Provisional IRA commanding officer in the prison led the other six strikers, who included Raymond McCartney, Tommy McKearney, Tommy McFeely, Leo Green, Sean McKenna and John Nixon of the INLA. They went on strike for five demands:

    1. The right not to wear the prison uniform;
    2. The right not to do prison work;
    3. The right of free association with other prisoners, and to organise educational and recreational pursuits
    4. The right to one visit, one letter and one parcel per week;
    5. The full restoration of remission lost during the protest.

  2. I think the IRA are and were cowards and murderers and glorified criminals.

    But I do love this period and this story.

  3. They were just terrorists who didn’t like being treated like terrorists because they somehow got the delusion that they were part of an official army.

  4. Why does r/Ireland have a history flair but instead not have posts recommended over to IrishHistory sub instead?

    Some perfectly fine questions and posts over the past year or more have been taken down from this sub to be moved to Ask Ireland or Casual Ireland instead. But this is ok?

    I’m not against history itself but the rules seem inconsistent.

    Edit: some unsurprising patterns of up and downvoting in this thread. It’s been a while since we had one of these IRA threads where serious levels of brigading takes place with voting.

  5. Some very ignorant comments acting like the IRA accomplished nothing and Irish catholics had equal rights in the north.

  6. Hmmmm did Brendan Hughes not admit being involved in murdering and disappearing Jean mcconville?

    That’s some hero right there

    Edit: jaysus lads it says a lot about ye that you’re downvoting me in favour of a man who admitted in the Boston tapes that he was involved in dragging an innocent woman out of her home in front of her kids and murdering her.

  7. A lot of people don’t know that there was a hunger strike before the big hunger strike. These men deserve as much respect as the 1981 hunger strikers. I’ve seen a few of these men after and although they didn’t die on the strike a few definitely died because of it.

    It’s great to see how far northern politics has changed in the last 30 years and I’d be a liar to say the ira didn’t play a massive part in that.

  8. Ireland has a long history of occupation and oppression.

    In each generation, it produced men and women who would go to any lengths to destroy the status quo.

    When the six counties were annexed and remained under British control, it set the stage for more violence to come.

    Two tribes, irreconcilable differences, and savage violence from both sides.. including voilence orchestrated by the British.

    Irelands history is full of heroes/ villains… and we make our own judgement on what we deem them to be
