Its really a huge problem in Germany. In 2023 we had a recession with -0.3 % GDP. If you normalize the sick days to pre-Covid levels it would actually have been an increase by 0.5 %.
The reasons are complex, though. A maturing society with more older (and therefore sicker) people in combination with a worker shortage (which means you can get away with being more often sick) and less regulation after covid (you don’t have to see a doctor, but you can call the doctor to call in sick).
I only had two sick days in 7 years. Go Denmark
