Labour could be forced to reopen asylum hotels as migrant numbers surge – despite manifesto pledges to ‘end’ the policy and save the taxpayer ‘billions’

  1. >Latest official data showed that at the end of June the total stood at 29,585. Since then, just over 14,000 migrants have arrived across the Channel, most of whom will have been housed in hotels, suggesting the current total is more than 40,000.

Daily Mail failed to consider that many of those in hotels since June would have been processed and moved out of hotels. Also, not all small boat migrant stays in hotels. Nonetheless it is lower than a peak of 56,000 migrants under Tory rule.

  2. Smash the gangs 🤣

Just like we’ve been able to control the drug trade all these years.

Clueless. Record numbers as we all knew.

  3. This is very predictable.  The EU is moving to a Rawanda style solution,  in sharp contrast and Labour are unable to formulate a realistic policy, because of their ideology. This is costing a fortune and it’s potentially dangerous to allow people in without background checks.

  4. UK citizens graduate from Universities, and struggle to find jobs and homes, but the people who put their lives at risk of their own choice/making and can find enough money to pay their fare across the channel get houses and provided for.
What the hell is going on? What does the UK have an immigration force for? The Asylum system has been abused and is still being abused.

  5. Someone is funding this mass influx of third world migrants. 100s of 1000s of them now. Someone is getting rich or recieving envelopes. The great replacement.

  6. Of course the Tories will blame the three month old government rather than the previous 14 year old one that left the gutted systems, pursued brexit for a fantasy we ruled the waves and offered off barmy schemes such as Rwanda (albeit more people would have been put off by putting out a stock image of Braverman holding a baby).

  7. It’s almost like making the processing quicker leads to mass acceptance and word spreads so we become even more of a pull factor.

We are governed by complete fucking clowns

  8. No documents no entry as we have no way to return them if they break the law or fail the asylum process.

If they arrive with no documents we will send them another country for processing or until their home country is located.

Our public services and tax payers money cannot be buried in this never ending run of asylum. When I pay taxes I expect it to go to services that are provided for people who work and live here. Not funding a hotel for them.

  9. Why don’t we allow asylum seekers to work under certain conditions (more liberal than the ones we have now)? They’d then be forced to pay for their own accommodation and food.

  10. We’re in the strange position of the EU stepping up border control and deportations, just as Starmer shut down our own plans for brownie points with the EU.

Denmark are now deporting non-European prisoners to Kosovo, which is notable for being a non-ECHR destination like Rwanda. Italy are holding asylum seekers in Albania. Poland are shutting their border with Belarus. The EU are funding processing centres in Tunisia, Libya and looking across to other Med countries. They have an entire new migration pact going through. Meanwhile a lot of the UK elite are stuck around 2015 mentally, thinking faster processing and “smashing the gangs” are magic bullets.

  11. Why can the UK not just copy the way the UN and other international organisations deal with refugees, set up military style tents on an old MoD base etc.

If it is good enough for our soldiers abroad it should be fine for these ‘desperate people who are fleeing conflict” …

  12. The insane part of all this…?

That people actually believe that Labour being voted in and being against some Tory policies means that those policies would stop (literally stop dead) the day after the election.

This shit takes time to change. It doesn’t happen overnight.

It takes a lot longer than it does the Daily Mail to make up another daily degenerate headline.

  13. Shocking as this may seem, you don’t actually have to accept a singular person onto British Isle soil. You can turn their boats around before they reach land and you can deport the ones on soil expeditiously by boat or plane. These issues are essentially fake, in the sense that they have obvious, easy, and simple solutions. We are just so afraid to hurt people’s feelings and be perceived as mean. If youve passed through a singular nation safer than where you come from, you’re case for asylum is malarkey. We in the global North and West do not owe the global south access to our productive people, land, infrastructure, and economies.

  14. Daily Mail blames immigrants when the Tories were in power. Now it’s labours fault for not magically fixing the situation instantly. The situation the Tories created. It’s like a comedy sketch on how ridiculous these stories are.

  15. Dont be fooled. they WANT mass immigration, flood the country with immigrants and have cheap labour/workforces. Immigrants will work for less sadly

  16. From my experience at least this spending creates jobs in the UK. The tourism industry / housing market is not doing well in the UK, this gives a lot of towns a cash injection. The money only goes out of country once we set up stupid deals to Rwanda etc.

  17. Immigration (legal or otherwise) generally only increases over time while capitalism runs governments. If you’re a landlord or corporate shareholder then **all** immigration is good financially: more tenants, more low-pay staff and more consumers. Even if there’s a far greater cost to the working class and degradation of various non-financial aspects to society.

We even have examples and case studies, e.g. the USA’s socioeconomic journey over the course of the 20th century. The result being trillion dollar companies, extreme privitisation and no social safety net.

  18. Saying what I said in another thread

Immigration worked after the war. The people came from subsections of the British empire, their teachers were British, they spoke the language and they strived to become British citizens. They went on to be doctors, businessmen and shop owners. Fast forward to now these people coming in are not doctors or engineers, they can’t speak the language and don’t even want to. They hate the UK and what have we done to them? Nothing. We can’t have these people flooding the country hundreds a day.

  19. Turns out you can’t cut costs unless you can control the costs.

And you can’t control the costs if you can control the people you are paying and don’t want to take responsibility for any of the outcomes.
