- Migros is going on the offensive. The struggling retailer wants to invest CHF 2.5 billion to open new shops, modernise existing ones and reduce prices.
- Despite cost-cutting measures, Migros wants to invest on a grand scale. A total of 350 existing supermarkets are to be modernised over the next five years, as the company announced on Monday.
- Migros also plans to open 140 new supermarkets over the next five years. The number of shops is to increase from 790 to 930.

Paperbag gambit seems to be paying off.
Sounds good. Maybe that way they will catch up to Coop.
If it creates more jobs then I’m happy with that.
Good luck, I just saw a new lidl catalog with the whole page dedicated to being now in the 9th year in the row price champion.
I didn’t know croissant can be below 1 chf, let alone 0.7 chf until I entered lidl. So yes, let’s see what a price reduction for migros is.
And somehow, lidl managed to avoid 200 chf paper bag scandals.
Im new in Switzerland , isnt migros a cheaper Alternative to coop, or is aldi the one whos killing migros?
Not sure if more stores is the answer. At the end of the day migros has to compete on price with aldi, lidl (and Denner). And it’s not that quality is that differentiating or important in the current environment.
As a migros child, I fully support this plan to win against evil coop.
Ah that‘s where the paperbag money is invested now.
I don’t get it – was it supposed to be closing the non food side of things? The big MMM store near had some 70% off deals, I picked up a couple of bargains, the place looked like it was being completely emptied.. All the clothing, ski wear, sports stuff etc – gone.
Then back in last week and it’s all restocked, same items that were on sale, shelves all full again, back to full price.
The other one near me has the full christmas stock out, ski hire open, garden center etc etc.
Recently the Migros in Interlaken was remodeled. Looks good now!
How about staying open until past 18:30
Great, maybe they can replace our local SPAR? They are obnoxiously expensive.
Will they finally change the fart ripped couches in migros limmatplatz restaurant?
So they reopen all the shops they’ve closed in the 90’s? ^^
140 new opportunities to collect 200CHF fines 🤣🤣
Good news re modernisation, our local one is like something from the 1970s.
All joking aside, I would like everyone to remember the number 2.5 billion CHF.
When it comes down to the bill, I will be extremely curious how much of that actually went into taking action, and how much was spent on consultants.
That ratio will really show if Migros is on the way to becoming less or more of a slow, bureaucratic monster.
So Migros:
– struggling retailer
– looking to cut costs
– wants to modernize and expand number of stores.
All this whilst everyday we hear of more and more people being fired nationwide in multiple jobs.
Got this right?
