Iberdrola, the Spanish multinational energy company, has promoted Nuria Brinkmann (pictured) to head of legal for Portugal. Brinkmann, an experienced energy lawyer, joined the company in September 2022 as legal counsel, after working eight years at Miranda & Associados.

The Iberdrola group set up its subsidiary in Portugal in 2004. Since then, Iberdrola has developed several awarded solar projects in the country and has put almost ten projects with different technologies into operation in the country since, including one of the largest hydro projects in Europe. It is currently developing another 2GW in solar energy plants in Portugal, split amongst three projects in Sines and Moura, which will be able to supply clean energy to almost a million households and significantly contribute to the country’s decarbonization plan.

Nuria Brinkmann says, “It’s an exciting time for renewables, and working as close to the business as we do at the Iberdrola’s legal team gives you a better sense of the dimension of things. This comes with challenges, though, especially given the uniqueness of these projects, which are unprecedented in the country, both in size and technological innovation. It forces you to think outside the box and be creative, which makes it all the more interesting.”

As to her recent promotion she says “After two years at Iberdrola, I am delighted and honored to be given the opportunity and trust to head the in-house team in Portugal. The renewables business has been growing significantly since I joined the team, and we are becoming stronger every year as the projects grow in maturity and scale.” Brinkmann holds a degree in law from the University of Granada, Spain and a Master’s in Environmental Law from the IIFA (Instituto Internacional de Formación Ambiental).
