Nato chief Mark Rutte has alleged that North Korean troops have been deployed to Russia’s Kursk region, where Vladimir Putin’s forces are seeking to repel Ukraine’s forces following their incursion in August.

Speaking after Russian officials claimed on Monday to have blocked an attempt by an “armed group” to breach the border from Ukraine into the nearby Bryansk region, Mr Rutte said he could confirm the deployment of North Korean soldiers in Kursk.

Their presence in Russia marks “a significant escalation” in North Korea’s involvement in the conflict and “a dangerous expansion of Russia’s war”, Mr Rutte said, following a briefing to Nato officials and diplomats from a South Korean delegation.

It came as Mr Putin claimed Russia would use “a range of responses” if the US and its Nato allies allowed Ukraine to strike inside his country with Western long-range weapons.

On the frontline, Russia lost nearly 200 soldiers, with 80 confirmed fatalities in Ukraine’s east in the past 24 hours where a fierce battle is underway, military officials said.

  2. What “range of responses” is Russia going to employ as they get hammered by Ukrainian Palianytsia and Hrim attacks? Because that’s what’s coming at them now.

    Russia’s defeat is at the hands of Ukraine and Ukraine alone. It is they alone — the supposedly nonexistent people, with a nonexistent country and supposedly no history or future — who have repelled the massive (former) power of Russia and are striking with increasing impunity anywhere in Russia they choose.

    We others who have aided can be proud of our support but try as he might Putin can never pin this on anyone else but Ukraine. It is they who are bringing him down.

    (And, we must continue our proud support for our friend, and enlarge it. So very little is asked of us. They will do the rest.)

  3. The fact he’s coming out and making poxy threats about long-range weapons use shows exactly why it needs to be authorised. He’s effectively announcing the fear and lack of capability to respond to it by throwing his toys out of the cot.

    I’m not in favor of European troops in Russia. I’m in favor of European help on Ukraines territory.

    If Putin can use NK troops, Ukraine can station NATO troops in Ukraine itself.
