Matilde Lorenzi, a promising young Italian skier, has been killed in a tragic accident during training. On Monday, October 28, the 19-year-old crashed while training on the Schnalstal Glacier/Val Senales Glacier in South Tyrol, Italy. Her condition appeared critical from the start: Lorenzi was intubated and airlifted by helicopter to the San Maurizio hospital in Bolzano following the severe fall. The Ministry of Defence confirmed the news of her passing on the morning of Tuesday, October 29. Lorenzi was an athlete with the Italian army.
“The Defence Ministry and Minister @GuidoCrosetto extend their deepest condolences,” the Ministry of Defence announced in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter). “We embrace the family and colleagues of Corporal Matilde Lorenzi, an athlete with the army and a bright promise in Italian skiing, who tragically lost her life following a serious accident during a training session.”
According to the Italian news agency ANSA, Lorenzi lost her stance after her skis skidded apart on the glacier course Grawand (G1). As a result, she hit the rock-hard piste face first. She suffered a severe traumatic brain injury and was in intensive care. Unfortunately, she lost her battle overnight in hospital, just two weeks from her 20th birthday.
Lorenzi was a promising young talent on the Italian team. In March this year, the 19-year-old won two Italian National Championships in Super-G and Giant Slalom. She also won the National Title in the Junior Women’s Giant Slalom.
