“People say it’s impossible to Just Stop Oil, but we would argue it always seems impossible until it’s done. What choice do we have? Scientists are telling us if we carry on burning fossil fuels, crops will fail, billions of people will be exposed to unlivable conditions, hundreds of millions will face starvation and ultimately death. We need a rapid fossil fuel phase out and an emergency plan to protect the people.
“Mandela devoted his life to the service of humanity, as a human rights lawyer, political activist, a prisoner of conscience and an international peace maker. Keir Starmer and his ministers could choose to follow Mandela’s example. Instead, they stand with Israel as it slaughters and maims Palestinians and Lebanese, they cheer the incarceration of those involved in the nonviolent struggle to defend life on earth and they defend the companies that are profiting from death and destruction.
“Our struggle will not end until we break the endless cycle of failed politics as usual. The system is broken and we cannot rely on these or any other politicians to save us. We need revolution in how we make decisions, empowering ordinary people to decide their own futures through citizen-led assemblies. That’s why we’re calling on everyone to join us for a day of action on November 2nd.”
You should have done this to something like the Signal Hill Oil Worker Statue.
Maybe not the best target? Paintings? Sure? But Nelson Mandela was a super important figure
Globally, SUVs are setting sales records every year to the point that they now make up half of all new vehicle sales, and are having a noticeable impact on global emissions. Each purchase is locking in high oil usage (and therefore high emissions) for years.
Airline travel has rebounded and people all around the world are back to flying like crazy. Through the current week, there have already been more than 31 million commercial flights, an average of 102,385 flights per day. I’m not going to be surprised if the number of global passengers this year surpasses the 5 billion mark (the record is 4.46 billion in 2019).
The cruise ship industry is still booming, with the cruise lines building more and bigger ships to keep up with the surging demand. They quite literally cannot build them fast enough to keep up with all of the people who want to laze about on the ocean for a week or two (or however long cruises are, I’ve never taken one).
These are just the three more obvious things. I could easily add another dozen. Or twenty. Or thirty.
“Just stop oil” sounds great in theory, but until people stop buying into a lifestyle that requires a lot of oil, it’s not going to stop. It’s only going to increase.
As a global society, we’re still living in a fantasyland, thinking that we can keep living an oil-based lifestyle while at the same time exhorting the world stop the flow of oil.
Less oil means less of everything we’ve come to accept as normal in the wealthy countries. Stopping oil means it all goes away.
It’s easy to vandalize a statue or some art. How about vandalizing the things that are causing these issues?
