  1. FIFY – “when an oligarch I don’t agree with bought one. Before that it was perfect.”

  2. Not really. News was always owned by oligarchs. In fact, we’re currently living through the most “democratized” media landscape in modern history. The internet and the smartphone has made everyone a ‘journalist.’ Good or bad, we haven’t seen this type of decentralization of reporting since the printing press.

List of News Organizations owned by oligarchs:
    -NYT, Ochs-Sulzberger family (since 1896)
-[*San Francisco Chronicle*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/San_Francisco_Chronicle), the [*Houston Chronicle*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Houston_Chronicle), [*Cosmopolitan*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmopolitan_(magazine)) and [*Esquire*](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Esquire_(magazine))*,* not to mention 50% of A&E, and a 20% stake in ESPN all owned by the Hearst Family
-NBCUniversal, GE (formed by Edison/JP Morgan)
-CNN, google history of AT&T, and Alexander Graham Bell
-Washington Post, Eugene Meyer (1st President of the World Bank Group, Chairman of the Federal Reserve)

  3. Journalism died when capitalism

    Healthcare died when capitalism

    Education died when capitalism

    Technology died when capitalism.

    …I’m seeing a trend.

  4. Rupert Murdoch got a Newt Ginrich led Congress to alter media ownership laws in the late 1980s and he bought channel 5 in New York (he already owned the NY Post etc). He used this TV station to begin what is now Fox News etal.Ronald Reagan repealed the Fairness Doctrine which required broadcasters to air opposing views, which led to Rush Limbaugh and the demise of AM talk radio. Thanks guys 😑

  5. I think it started to die when how it made profit changed in the internet age, and with 24 hour news. It became even less about informing the public, and more about generating views for profit.

  6. Journalism died in The United States with the death of Tge Fairness Doctrine.

Lets not forget that the rest of the world has places with journalistic integrity.

  7. And when the FCC allowed ownership of numerous radio stations and television stations within the same market, thanks started to crumble. When companies can own hundreds and hundreds of radio stations across the country quality went down the toilet.

  8. Jefferson said something along the lines of, that if he had to choose between Democracy, and a free press, he’d choose a free press.

Controlling the media, by this measure, controlling public discourse, is a more important form of regulatory capture to them than controlling our government.

We need to purge and check their influence in both spheres, and it starts with this one.

  9. Journalism died from the liable laws not being applied to the content providers if a user is posting false statements. It was the first step back in the 90s.
