That’s almost twice as many as in the huge Central European floods in September, absolutely horrifying.
This is just going to get worse and worse every year, and both the Central Government and especially the CCAA (hell they even cut on the budget for this) are doing fuck all.
Valencia has always had flash floods, it’s a very dry area, but when it rains, it pours. This was unprecedented though
So sorry for all the people hurt and killed and terrified.
These rain events in Spain and Italy are becoming reliably extreme. The whole infrastructure needs to be adapted to it and there isn’t enough time or resources to do that.
And hundreds upon hundreds have spent the night on top of vehicles, structures, roofs… with no hope of getting rescued due to the massive scale of the floods. Twitter and radio stations yesterday were so scary, with many people calling to give their coordinates hoping for some help.
“The chance (80%) of at least one of the next five years exceeding 1.5°C has risen steadily since 2015, when such a chance was close to zero. For the years between 2017 and 2021, there was a 20% chance of exceedance, and this increased to a 66% chance between 2023 and 2027.”
This is what positive feedback from climate change tipping points looks like folks. We will no doubt be reading the phrase “Faster than expected” repeatedly over the next few years.
Without being dramatic, your future depends upon you voting for and supporting climate action.
Tonight around 600 people had to sleep in a mall , they couldn’t leave, near Valencia.
People had to go to work despite being red alert at 9:30 AM and knowing about the storm beforehand so business could keep profiting, as always capital goes before the lives of the workers, the businessmen have blood in their hands
Hi everyone, can anyone tell me if Valencia City is actually flooded? Or is it just the surrounding areas and to the south? There is too much data congregation around this event I can’t figure out what is actually happening within the city.
And it looks like there will be more. What a horrifying news! 😢
And the new regional government had the “brilliant” idea of closing its Emergency Unit…
i saw this on twitter and it’s unbelievable, sending prayers to the citizens of valencia
This is after the right-wing government of this region dismantled the unit dedicated to deal with emergencies, because there are some climate change deniers. This is also after companies, despite being aware of the potential flooding, still didn’t tell workers to not go to work that day.
This is devastating, my heart goes out to everyone involved and affected
I’m sorry for the loss and have family isolated there. They are ok but without water. Victims are going ro increase a lot in the next hours if the region government has the balls to report them.
For now, the far right is already lying on many things, so i can tell you that:
* Valencia far-right government closed down the emergency team as soon as it arrived to office. * They didnt send the region climate alarm until 20h when this was already being announced by the country climate agency 4-5 days prior. * The far right is blaming the country government for demolishing dams, when no dam was demolished in the region. Just a small bump in a single river. * The far right says this happened many times when actually: in the 50s, the flood happened because there was no dam and redirection of the river, and the flood in the 80s happened because a dam collapsed. * This was about twice as powerful as the usual october storms in Valencia. * This was talked already during summer, where the temperature of the Mediterranean sea was at max levels and this is correlated to the intensity of these storms. * They didn’t send the alarm until 20h so work offices and pubs could remain opened. * At around 22h already there were big floods and victims.
Ok this seems bad but think of the shareholder value
