  1. Good. Ban alcohol.

It just means more people will die from substandard moonshine while the tax revenues are redirected to violent criminal groups who’ll sell the booze at a mark-up while destabilising society as they battle it out for supremacy among themselves

  2. Time to start smuggling in distilling equipment to help the lads find a way around this. No good Russian should have to suffer a day without bathtub vodka.

  3. Wouldn’t that make people start making their own “spirits”, that would be more dangerous and kill even more people? No way these people suddenly will start drinking less.

  4. The stats are skewed because there are far fewer working-age men in the region compared to last year.

  5. “Sorry your conscripted husband didn’t die in Ukraine it was cirrhosis, no PS5 for you”

  6. Restricting the time that they can buy it will do nothing. They’ll just buy it during the legal window and drink it later.

  7. It will make things worse. Population will turn to moonshine (“Самогон”) and questionable liquor and death toll will go through the roof.

  8. If your economy & living conditions are so bad that 71% of working age men kill themselves via alcohol consumption, then you should’ve overthrown your government decades ago.

  9. They tried this once before if I remember right and the government complained about a lack of tax revenue so they backed off and just started producing more. It is really crazy to count on a sin tax to keep your country running.

  10. You might have wanted to start with that a many few decades ago. By now the damage is done and is likely irreversible.

  11. Alcoholism has always been a massive problem in Russia and the Soviet Union, as has fetal alcohol syndrome. It is part of the cycle of monotony, extreme poverty and complete lack of opportunities to break out of this cycle that exists in most of Russia, and has done for many generations. This is also a major factor in why so many Russian’s sign up to fight in Putin’s invasion of Ukraine – they have little else to live for.

  12. Oh, surprise! The social component is being discovered. It would be nice if you sacrificed yourselves as a bottle in the trenches instead of at the kitchen table with the bottle. At least show some responsibility for your country for once

  13. Russians are not so strong after all and the political class found out that people are not so easily replaceable….

  14. Yeah……probably an excuse since Ukraine has hit several distilling plants with drones. My guess is there will be no alcohol or a severe shortage. I guess it’s better than admitting they were hit by drones!

  15. A similar situation with tobacco use.

Simply put they can’t restrict any of the vices common to Russians cause Russians are all too happy to riot over any restrictions or shortages of their vices.

Economy in shambles? It’s fine. Stay home

Drones flying overhead? It’s fine. Stay home

Enemy invading your country? It’s fine. Stay home

Your men being sent into a foreign meat grinder? It’s fine. Stay home

Your favorite brand of vodka or cigarette isn’t on the shelf? Make molotovs and hit the streets. Give them hell because you’re sober for the first time in a decade.
