My ISP green.ch just informed me that domain fees will be going up. This is ridiculously and just another example of fantasy prices just because something is swiss.

It looks like everything is going up – except my salary.

  1. According to [Hostpoint](https://support.hostpoint.ch/en/products/domain/swiss-domain-names/what-is-the-reason-for-the-price-difference-between-ch-and-swiss-domains)

    >What is the reason for the price difference between .ch and .swiss domains?

In contrast to most other top-level domains (e.g. .ch, .com, .org), various checks are carried out for .swiss domains to ensure compliance with the regulations for the allocation and operation of the domains. This guarantees, for example, that the owner of .swiss domains has a direct connection to Switzerland.

  2. Where did this .swiss domain craze come from? I’ve noticed recently that many companies have such a domain instead of the normal .ch one. Especially building companies or other craft businesses…

  3. Some people buy “Audi’, some buy “Porsche”. Both are cars and will transport you from A to B.

Therefore: Ignore .swiss, get a .ch domain, and it will be good. πŸ™‚

  4. You realize the point of .swiss domains? And the checks to qualify for one? Its not like the usual TLDs

  5. Green.ch is a good ISP but they just suck at hosting in my experience. Bought a domain with them which didn’t work and which was still shown as available to the public. When asking the support they advised me to buy it again, and finally after a week a real technician found out it’s a premium domain which was sold to me too cheap by mistake, so it wasn’t registered correcty. At least they cancelled and refunded my order immediately.

  6. All the commentators suggesting a .ch domain do you really believe OP has never heard of or considered it?

  7. When Namecheap tried to increase my domain fee by like 50X for an .io domain about 10 years I managed to just cut them out of the deal and transfer management directly to the organisation that runs the TLD. Now I pay less than Namecheap were ever charging me.

Just coz it was possible in my case definitely doesn’t mean it’s possible for you, but could be worth looking into.

You might think it’s “just supply and demand” but I don’t think that’s the case really. It’s more like registrars are just charging whatever [rent](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rent-seeking) they think will go under the radar of 90% of their customers (who are businesses who prefer to get fleeced instead of waste time on the admin to get a better deal).
