  1. “I’ll answer the other way” He should have been interrupted there and then and pressured to answer the question…

  2. We should have a tax on social media companies that pays for public service broadcasting.

  3. Wow – ah look, when AIB got their billions the first billion went to their pension account ! Oul Sheehy, on 500k a year and who drove the bank on the rocks gets that every year ! Oh, and he came back as a consultant !!

Lessons learned u see, lessons learned ….. RTE are laughing their asses off and the redundancy gravy train will roll on …

Corruption at the finest level yet, u don’t pay that licence and they will chase you to hell …

  4. And yet a quarter of voters will support this spoofer.

He had his chance to correct the imbalance in funding and he maintained the status quo.

Non stop claim about what he’d do in the next government while currently not even trying

  5. A question is put to him, and rather than answer it, he asks himself two or three questions and answers them.

Shouldn’t have been let waffle, but at the same time it’s not prime time.

  6. There’s more ads on Virgin Media TV and they don’t have radio or online or kids or Irish language stuff. Perhaps they should get more money from the state and then have to adjust the amount of advertising around some of their more Public Service content?

  7. Several million Euro, so less than 10, for local radio, other TV, and other public service broadcasting he “really values”, _between them_, and 750 million Euro for RTÉ.

He must **really** value the work of RTÉ.

  8. Why should a commercial station be getting a government hand out in the first place?

RTÉ is far from perfect, but much like the BBC it’s remit is to be the state broadcaster. Could it do better? Absolutely. However, for news, local interest, etc it’s what we have. It’s not meant to make a profit, it’s meant to be the public broadcaster, funded by the people and the money it makes gets re-invested into programming. Same goes for TG4.

Scandals about spending really get Irish people moaning, fairly pointlessly if I’m honest., but defunding RTÉ is extremely dangerous, and bad management is not a reason to do so.

Virgin is a for-profit outlet, money doesn’t necessarily go back into the community or programming, but shareholders. Why should the state fund that?

I truly do believe in a diverse and competitive media landscape, but a commercial station can’t expect to go cap in hand to the government every time they have a poor quarter. That’s not creating a diverse landscape.

We’re actually lucky to be honest that Virgín doesn’t have much shareholder/owner meddling like some UK/US outlets, but either way the state shouldn’t be exposed to that.

  9. “I think that the next government, which I hope to be a part of, should do this” is so fucking funny so say while youre the acting government leader. Like literally “oh I can’t get to it now, but if you elect me again I PROMISE” I’ll get around to it.

  10. Classic politician, can’t engage like a human being and answer the question. Immediately triggers the PR response when asked.

  11. I hate the bones of that wall bracket. Absolute smugness personified. Not a moral to spare.

  12. He reversed the question and then interviewed himself 😂😂😂

Where are the hard hitting journalists???

  13. Rte shouldn’t get anything till they can produce a decent rte player.

This government genuinely pisses money away all day every day.

  14. Virgin Media in an English company trying to make more millions in Ireland. Let them show The Chase 20 times a day all they like. We’re not funding a salary increase for Brian Downing.

  15. Sorry but Virgin Media Ireland is the Irish division of a global conglomerate (Liberty Global Ltd) which is a publicly traded company, why on earth would they think they should be getting government funding? If they need extra funding they can talk to their bosses upstairs.

  16. Virgin media entered the market with full knowledge that they would be competing with a state funded media broadcaster. This man applied for a job at virgin media knowing the same information.

They can’t turn around now and complain that it is unfair. No one forced them into the market. Their current position is fair and entirely a result of their own decisions.

Virgin media can fuck right off. We can’t afford to start paying these leeches too. The sense of entitlement from some business groups is crazy. They all think the government should be funding their terrible business decisions.
