  1. I am an immigrant and never heard of S2 before. Immigrant kids should work harder to catch up instead of being sent to easier classes. My son has always been at the top of his class in Finnish. It’s very possible for immigrant kids to master Finnish, it just takes work. If your kid is lagging behind, whether he’s an immigrant or a Finn (I know some Finnish kids who at 12 can barely read and write) it’s the parents’ job to step in. The school system can only do so much.

  2. It is a huge surprise that the Finnish education system has not been designed for immigrant children –
    or, am I missing something?

  3. If possible, it is better to put the immigrant kid with the natives in regular track. The stuff they teach are way more advanced than S2. Going through S2 makes sure the kid will never be able to reach higher education levels without enormous independent effort later on to catch up, and if they were able to do that, they could have just attended regular classes from the beginning.

  4. My kids jumped into 2nd and 4th grade this year, with only a limited Finnish vocabulary (numbers, colors, foods). After 2 months fully immersed they are both doing fine. They are way ahead in most subjects, so that helps them to learn the Finnish.

  5. Reading that article makes me sad. You move to a new country with your kids for a better life. You are discriminated against in finding jobs due to your name and your kids are put in “S2”.

  6. I came to Finland when I was 11 and I’m half Finnish, so I already had some speaking skills. S2 helped me from 5th-9th grade but when I went to highschool I was still stuck in s2 and I wasn’t learning anything at all. Everything I learnt was stuff I already knew or learnt by talking to people in finnish. I really wish I learnt more cuz now I feel stuck with my somewhat limited vocabulary, it fucking sucks. I constantly have to look up words or say them in English because I can’t remember or know what they are in finnish
