  1. we can’t consume our way out of overconsumption. Fish farms have never been the answer. *Eating less fish* has always been the answer

  2. As someone who has always had vegetarian leanings and done vegetarianism for long periods, especially for animal rights reasons and cultural reasons (I’m Indian), it made sense to eat fish, or so I thought.

I knew a lot of vegetarians who would make an exception for fish, and there are lots of people who are convinced eating healthy is eating fish.

But the more you study what’s going on, the more I’m sure eating fish is a terrible idea for them and the planet. First, water is horribly polluted. The level of micro plastics and full on garbage is insane. Historically, lots of nuclear testing over the Pacific as well. Many fish from lakes have metal buildup.Youve got mercury buildup, but aluminum as well.

    Farming is of course bad.

And, it’s becoming more and more apparent that we are starving animals and disrupting systems by over fishing.
There was an expose in the Seattle Times about orcas starving to death because there were just no salmon left. Even Seattle World was begging people not to eat salmon.

I’m basically convinced no one should be eating fish…

  3. we already have factories that make and sell crickets for pet food, and worms aren’t that hard to farm. we need some big bug alternatives.

  4. This is nothing new. In British Columbia, we have been fighting against fish farms for as long as I can remember. So many issues with open net farming – catching wild fish stock of any size to make pellets is just one. Massive increase in sea lice on wild smolts has been proven, as has the damage these do to all wild stocks.

The arguments for farming salmon began with “it will reduce consumption of wild salmon”. That didn’t happen. We were also told the Atlantic salmon won’t get loose (spoiler alert – they did). Then we were told even if they did get loose, they won’t survive. And if they do survive, they won’t spawn. Wrong on all counts.

All consumers have a choice. If you feel like eating fish, eat something that is farmed in a manner that doesn’t deplete wild stocks. Or eat wild salmon if you want salmon.
