The leader of Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD), Alice Weidel, said on Wednesday that Donald Trump is a role model for Germany, as the former president appeared close to a victory in the US election.
Asked on Germany’s Deutschlandfunk radio whether Trump and his “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) movement were examples for the AfD, Weidel said: “Make America Great Again – making Germany great – oh definitely! Because we as the AfD stand up for the national interests and for the people in the Federal Republic of Germany. Of course he is a role model for us.”
Weidel also said that the US election could be a model for Germany, speaking of the clear statement Trump’s campaign made “against mass migration, crime and economic decline, against misguided climate ideology, misguided gender ideology and war policy.”
It was not “woke Hollywood” that decided this election, she said, but the working population.
Regarding the possibility of tariffs on EU products planned by Trump and their consequences for Germany’s export industry, Weidel said the problems in Germany were homemade, referring to high energy prices and taxes.
The conservative broadcaster Fox News has already declared Republican candidate Trump the overall winner against Democrat Kamala Harris, but other media networks and US news agency AP have not done so. Trump declared himself the winner in a speech in Florida.
