Blinken to meet Mexico’s Obrador for talks as migration surges at US border • FRANCE 24 English

Well he’s really looking to address what is a a growing humanitarian crisis at the border and that’s being underlined even as we speak with another Caravan of uh potentially thousands of migrants 6 to 10,000 um people currently marching um through Mexico on their way to the southern border um these are people from

Cuba Venezuela Urus Haiti and and really just another example of uh what is a huge political headache for both the US and Mexico um I think Anthony blinkin will be pushing president oor to increase resources Mexico has a relatively small um immigration law enforcement uh Force um and um and

Really looking to try and keep um migrants um in southern Mexico um before they even reach the border at all and then some discussion over what ports of Entry might remain open or closed but in in previewing this meeting uh president oor has uh made the point that you know

He’s willing to work with the us but he uh he does think the US should reexamine some of the the sanctions it imposes on countries such as Cuba and and Venezuela that are seen as uh underlying factors uh driving uh this uh issue um also potentially provide Aid to countries uh

In uh in Latin America um I think he’s looking at the longterm and trying to address some of the the root causes of Mass migration but of course uh in America the uh election cycle means there’s a lot of pressure for for Quick Fix Solutions and so uh Anthony blinkin

And his boss uh Joe Biden Under Pressure to deliver some of those you mentioned the political headache that is uh immigration that has been true uh in the US for decades and it’s bound to be a key issue in this coming election uh cycle how do you think this is going to

Play out between the Republicans and the Democrats looking forward to the November 2024 elections it really has turned into a political hot potato and is seen as a a key vulnerability um for Joe Biden including Donald Trump the the likely Republican nominee hammering um hard on this uh now the White House will

Say look uh Joe Biden proposed uh immigration reform on his very first day in office Congress has failed to act on that just as it’s failed to act for decades um Biden somewhat belatedly did visit the Border um but it’s uh it’s a tricky one because uh now border security is tied

To Ukraine uh funding in the latest uh measures in Congress and uh they hope to get that done in December but it’s stalled to the new year and Republicans really sense an opportunity here um the last time I went to a Donald Trump campaign Ranny uh this was the number

One issue people were talking about Trump himself uh emphasizes it a lot in his speeches he’s going back to talking about uh building a border wall um the house Speaker Mike Johnson just wrote to Joe Biden last week asking for executive actions including uh building the border

Wall and and you hear some pretty extreme rhetoric from U Republicans uh candidate Ronda santz talking about uh shooting migrants on on site when they cross the border uh effectively extrajudicial killings some Republicans even talking about bombing areas of northern Mexico because uh of the threat

Of drug cartels and they talk about uh fentel um crossing the border um it it really has become a a huge talking point in the US and uh and you do hear even some Democrats saying that they have been um slow to get onto this issue and

That Joe Biden needs to take a lead on it soon

Secretary of State Antony Blinken travelled to Mexico on Wednesday in hopes of tackling surging migration. Around 10,000 people without authorisation are trying to cross the southern US border each day, nearly double the number before the pandemic, with a new caravan of hundreds if not thousands of people leaving by foot from southern Mexico on Sunday. Blinken is expected to push Mexico’s President Obrador to increase resources for border control and law enforcement to “keep migrants in southern Mexico before they even reach the border at all,” The Guardian’s Washington Bureau Chief David Smith told FRANCE 24.
