Storm Gerrit wreks through home as ‘tornado’ hits Manchester

Footage shows the extent of damage from Storm Gerrit after a ‘tornado’ damaged properties in Stalybridge, Greater Manchester on Wednesday night.

A tornado destroyed 100 homes and sparked evacuations as Storm Gerrit triggered chaos across Britain.

A “supercell thunderstorm” crossed Greater Manchester on Wednesday causing widespread damage to properties, the Met Office said.

The forecaster said that radar evidence showing a “strong rotating updraft” suggested that a tornado was “likely”.

Greater Manchester Police said officers were called to “numerous reports of significant damage” to homes in Stalybridge, Tameside, at around 11.45pm due to a “localised tornado”.

  2. Fun fact, Britain is hit by more tornadoes per area every year than any other place on earth, however they generally do not reach the category needed to class them as significant, 95% being only F0s or F1s, with the remaing 5% being F2s.
