One family’s fight against mould: ‘It’s been so bad’

Then the mo was here you could obviously like see it around here you could obviously like see more behind this dryer it’s now an all too familiar part of UK housing and they painted they only painted this side 15-year-old Jamie has lived here in temporary accommodation

With his brother and Mom for over 18 months now and you could see the M there right and it goes like into like that way so it’s like really bad they say they ation provider painted over all of this 3 months ago but it started to come

Back his entire bedroom was so overcome with mold Jam’s mom Heather can’t afford to keep the heating on all the time and the molds affecting their health it’s been so bad every year uh during the winter time when you can’t keep your windows open 24 hours a day uh the kids

And I always end up getting chest infections we’ve been sick every year cuz we all three have asthma and we can feel feel the effect all year round but during the winter time it gets particularly difficult new figures show Almost a third of people in Britain are

Living in homes with mold or damp cities in the west are more likely to experience dangerous conditions Cardiff Plymouth and Manchester top the list Bristol Glasgow and Liverpool make the top 10 and all of this being made worse by the energy crisis heating our homes is more expensive and so people are

Doing it less and with the higher cost of living add in poor quality and aging housing and that’s your recipe for more cold damp and therefore moldy homes this month marks three years since 2-year-old aish Shack died from the effects of mold in his home with calls now for more

Financial support to make homes energy efficient and a focus on bills we need to see action to keep our energy bills down because you can have all of these things in place but if you can’t afford to keep your home warm then you’re going to suffer from a cold damp conditions

Which could lead to mold and and that as we go into the 1 of January we’re obviously unfortunately going to see energy bills go up from the first of January and not go in the other direction Second City housing say they’ve made efforts to tackle the mold

But claim there’s been a failure to report leaks inadequate ventilation and poor maintenance a statement said we remain dedicated to resolving this matter promptly and collaboratively with Miss Leonard to ensure her living conditions meet necessary standards meanwhile Heather says her health and her children’s are at risk

And all this doesn’t feel like a home shed Adel Robinson Sky News Birmingham

  1. I've been there lived like that for 5 years the council didn't give me a thermostat or replacement boiler, eventually my room was covered in mould and my flat was so cold affected my health for years even to a point of having year long cold, didn't know what temperature I was living in anymore

  2. Its SHOCKING every housing and council knows exactly what's wrong with the properties as they are the ones who get the properties painted before putting a tenant in the property. Dont be fooled as they are big liers they left me in a horrible small property for over 24 years with wet smelly conditions even my clothes have fungal on them .also no guttering pipe the dsy i moved in i have suffered mentally and physically for 24 years because of catalyst Housing.

  3. Drying clothes on radiators because running a 2.5kw tumble drier costs way too much. Dehumidifying a house costs a lot of money and these people have none.

  4. Why are. Rita’s h people so useless? I found mould in my house, I found the leak then fixed it, I used mould remover and then used desiccant bags to control the moisture. Is it because they are so lazy they can’t do anything for themselves?

  5. This is also a problem in my country, but usually not as bad as showed here also I thought most houses in the uk have in floor heating something that isn’t common in my country, unfortunately bleach doesn’t always work it keeps appearing, I think the woman is a smoker so the mold is only a agraveted and not the cause, open your windows like the Germans

  6. Sky News are trying to whip this one up. The first ‘damp’ issue in the film was clearly a leak from above. Cleaning then venting the property will do wonders. The little boy that died had an incompetent mother (immigrant from Africa) who let mould grow out of control. Classic hack journalism.
