Rob Brydon’s very different take on ‘Hello’ by Lionel Richie | The Graham Norton Show – BBC

I went to drama school about 19 in Cardiff in Wales and wanted to join a society. So what do you join, the Real Ale Society? The rugby? No. I joined the Swansea Camp Society. Nothing to do with tents, Graham. This was… I don’t know if you use the word camp in America

For the same thing you do. Yes. Yes. This was a group of people who would meet once a week and talk to each other in a camp Swansea accent. That sounds awesome. Well, I will illustrate it for you. You had to audition, Mark. You had to audition.

You had to do Shakespeare and a song. So I did Julius Caesar, “Well the mighty Tiber was raging!” That wasn’t enough. You had to do a song as well. This was about 1984, 85. So I did Lionel Richie’s big hit. “I’d been alone with you inside my mind. In my dreams.

I’ve kissed your lips a thousand times. Sometimes I sees you pass outside my door. “Hello?” I was happy.

Rob Brydon reveals to Graham that when he was at university, he had to audition to join the ‘Swansea Camp Society’.

The audition involved quoting Shakespeare and singing ‘Hello’ by Lionel Richie in a camp Welsh accent – and he demonstrates both here!

In his traditional much-loved New Year’s Eve show, Graham takes a look back at some of the most memorable stories, people and events of 2023, with the help of a glittering sofa of guests.

Graham is joined by Hollywood stars Emma Stone and Mark Ruffalo, starring together in black comedy ‘Poor Things’, Strictly host Claudia Winkleman, returning in a new series of hit show ‘The Traitors’ and comedy great Rob Brydon, on tour with ‘A Night of Songs and Laughter’.

With music from one of this year’s standout bands, the Mercury Prize-winning Ezra Collective, who perform Victory Dance, and end-of-the-year stories in the world-famous Big Red Chair.

  1. Rob Brydon is an absolute treasure. Gavin & Stacey, The Trip with Steve Coogan, His Stand-up, His Podcast and of course one of the best shows on TV, Would I lie to you. Very clever man and I can see a lot more work Stateside. He deserves all the success he's had and what will surely come his way.
