Japan earthquake: cameras reveal panic as tremors strike | BBC News

Thousands of people have spent the night in emergency shelters in Japan after a powerful earthquake hit the west coast of the main island four people have died but many more are thought to be trapped beneath the rubble of collapsed buildings the epicenter of the 7.6 magnitude Quake was in the province of

Noto with tremors felt hundreds of miles away in the capital Tokyo tens of thousands of people were told to head to Higher Ground so ranana tiwari has the very latest for from Japan this footage from inside someone’s home captures the moment the powerful earthquake struck some staff at this news network

Took cover While others wanted to cover the story The 7.6 magnitude earthquake struck just after 4: in the afternoon local time it was caught on camera in this Supermarket there was chaos and confusion tsunami warnings were issued then downgraded on the Ishikawa Coastline and people were told to head to Higher

Ground I would like to ask all residents to continue to pay close attention to the occurrence of this strong earthquake if you are in a region where a tsunami is expected please evacuate as soon as possible more than 140 km from the epicenter this video was taken by English teacher Barney

Davis it just kept going it was really long and uh like the fridge door was opening and shutting pictures were going all over the place everything fell off the shelves it was pretty traumatic Barney and his family went to the local evacuation Center until he was told it

Was safe to return home but then literally just as we’re talking my phone’s given us alert there been another little earthquake up north again so the whole evening they been after shots despite the damaged to roads and buildings this earthquake is not as severe as 2011 when a magnitude 9 Quake

Triggered a tsunami leading to a nuclear meltdown at the Fukushima power plant this time all nuclear facilities are currently unaffected but following the earthquake a huge fire broke out in one of the affected areas and thousands are now spending the night outside and below zero temperatures fearful of going back

Into their homes as aftershocks continue to hit soana it’s a Daybreak now where you are what’s the latest that’s right Clive authorities have now downgraded that major tsunami h warning that was issued in ishaka prefecture when the earthquake struck um dozens of aftershocks did uh create trigger uh waves of about one meter

Which was felt across the west coast of Japan and as far as South Korea what we know is that houses have been damaged that um some fires have started and that Army Personnel have been deployed to try and help with the response there are already reports that infrastructure has

Been damaged and officials have warned that there may be more shocks aftershocks and Tremors in the coming days now um as you mentioned almost 100,000 people spent uh the night in evacuation centers tens of thousands of homes don’t have power and even here where I am in the mountains neighboring

Nagano perfecture we felt the um the Tremors and also it’s near freezing temperatures here so it’s a real problem if there are power Cuts H Japan’s vast transport network has also been affected by those power Cuts But Clyde um because Japan is such a hot bed of seismic

Activity the government has a pretty great um and sophisticated warning system a tsunami and Earthquake warning system we all got signals on our mobile phones ahead of uh the earthquake and so people were able to go go and get shelter and as you said Daybreak now so

We’ll know more about what the real damage is uh to buildings roads infrastructure and how many people are trapped as well w

A major search and rescue operation is underway in Japan after a powerful earthquake struck parts of the country.

More than 100 tremors caused serious damage and fears of a tsunami. Tens of thousands of people were evacuated from high risk areas.

The Prime Minister said rescue efforts were proving extremely difficult due to damage to roads and infrastructure in Ishikawa prefecture.

Several people were confirmed to have died with fears that other people are buried alive under rubble.

  1. Such a terrible start to a new year.๐Ÿ˜”
My heart and prayers go out to Japan. ๐Ÿ™
(Especially those directly effected, who lost homes and businesses, those injured, those missing, those that have passed on, and their loved ones.๐Ÿฅบ๐Ÿ˜ข๐Ÿ’”)
Such an amazing country and amazing people.๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿคโค๐Ÿคโค๐Ÿคโค I hope so much that as many people as possible are saved(if not all).
This just breaks my heart so much.๐Ÿฅบ

I know the Japanese people are strong though and will fight and make it through this disaster.
Again my prayers are with Japan.๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ต๐Ÿ™โค๐Ÿค

  2. This earthquake caused a great historical tragedy
in which 8 people died, and the Japanese Imperial family canceled the public visitation that had been held on the second day of the New Year.

  3. Being one of the snowiest areas in the snowiest country in the world, we should be glad that the weather has been so unusually warm there lately. Had this happened a week ago, during the snow storm that reached all the way to Southern Japan, there would be hundreds of homeless people out in the blizzard conditions. We should be thankful that the Siberian winds have been kind to Japan in these terrible times. My condolences to the people affected

  4. What's a complete shocking but also appalling and very sad way to start off the New Year Like This๐Ÿ˜ข๐ŸŽ‰ ever since the earthquake of 2011 it has been a huge preluding reminder of just how bad melancholy and also of just how traumatic the earthquake has been for Japan during 2011. Well not severe as the one 12 to 13 years ago it really did ruminate of just what it was back then over the last decade of such and it's really sad that Japan really has been very infamous for the earthquake and tsunami activities it has been fighting against. Now I hope the Japanese people are doing so strong and so well and so healthy of light that Japan's population is often very well known for their life expectancy being oh so long as always. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿ‡ฏ๐Ÿ‡ตโค
All love and prayers to the land of the Rising Sun we will all share your sympathy towards you as always
