South Africa’s shark spotters back in action as great whites return | BBC News

Protecting the public from sharks by scanning the Waters of K Town I’m checking for the movement in the water from here I have to see whatever is coming be it fish sharks uh dolphins or whals here Christmas is summertime and great white sharks have been seen this

Month for the first time in years a sighting means an alert and the Sea cleared of swimmers each morning the team seeks to create a safe bathing area off one beach there’ve been fatal shark attacks in this Bay in the past and that’s what led to this exclusion net being put in

To keep sharks away and the team here are actually putting the net down to the seabed and right across the bay to keep sharks away from swimmers and how close can the Sharks come in in this Bay we’re in now y like close they coming in like way deer they coming

Closer the Nets lifted each evening to avoid hurting or killing sea life up the coast at platenburg Bay the shark spotters were called in after two fatal attacks last year I I’m kimon kimon biso ran a pizza restaurant with her partner Diego she was very bright bright in personality

Big smile on the face playful and and kind and and with a big big art she was killed by great white shark the second person to die in months only then were shark spotting measures put in place an action sometime make a difference a not action will never make

A difference if someone put up a sign and say beware of Shar then maybe she wouldn’t probably be in after the first accident you know and that’s is just a one action a new kind of shark barrier is being built in Cape Town it’s recently been fitted on a PR private island in

The Bahamas designed to mimic an underwater Forest of kelp which sharks dislike it contains magnets intended to repel them sharks have a very sensitive organ around their eye and around their um their nose that allows them to feel electric and magnetic fields in the water so when we present them with a

Very large magnet such as this one we overwhelm that sense so it is very uncomfortable for them to come closer than one meter to this magnet some places seek to tackle Danger from sharks by killing them but in Cape Town the approach is different if you have the top predators

Taken away from the environment then you create a domino effect to the ecosystem that is going to be detrimental they overall do a really good job in keeping everything in Balance how to live with sharks is a life and death issue Daniel only BBC News Cape Town

Great white sharks have been seen off the beaches in South Africa’s coastal city of Cape Town for the first time in more than four years.

Some places, like coastal areas in South Africa’s KwaZulu-Natal province, seek to tackle the danger by using nets and baited hooks to kill sharks, but this also harms other sea life, such as dolphins and turtles.

The International Union for Conservation of Nature has said it strongly encourages non-lethal approaches to addressing the risk from sharks.

In Cape Town, the approach aims to protect both sharks and people by keeping them apart.

  1. Great to hear the sharks are back, but perhaps not for the sharks… or the seals or penguins (has anybody told them?).

SA always 50 years behind on the rest of the world on everything… shark nets kill indiscriminately – thousands of other non-lethal species die in nets every year. Many other ways to keep sharks away, councils too lazy & too cheap to invest in proper shark management strategies. Also, fisherman use that bach to fish, attracting sharks to the beach so that's not the shark' fault… and yes, we're intruding into their domain!

Also, great whites have a complex breeding system so any female killed is a blow to this endangered species population. But CoCT not good with managing ANY of its urban wildlife – too stubborn to consult experts or ask for help.

  2. RIGHT THIS MINUTE PRO HAMAS MARCHERS IN LONDON ARE FIGHTING IN OUR CAPITAL "AGAIN" WHERE ARE THE BBC JOURNALISTS.. THIS SHOULD BE HIGHLIGHTED A TAD MORE THAN SHARKS !!!

  3. Stay. The. Fuck. Out. Of. Water. With. Sharks! What is it with people and the absolute REQUIREMENT they must go in seas where sharks are known to be? Do something else for fuck sake.

  4. Who cares. Remember folks when you come to vote in the UK both Labour and Tory will house immigrants before their own people as they no longer care. Just remember 👍
