Return to Gambia – Paabi struggles to make a new start | DW Documentary

Paabi was deported from Libya during his second attempt to reach Europe illegally. Back in his home country Gambia, he’s trying to use a 1,000 Euro reintegration loan to build a new life for himself. But things aren’t going well.

As difficult as his situation in Gambia is, 23-year-old Paabi never wants to have to make the dangerous journey to Europe again. But the pressure on him here at home is immense. He wants to set up a business with the money he received from the International Organization for Migration to help him return home. But the start-up capital is soon spent on clothes and distributed to friends and family. His attempt to earn money on the timber market fails. At the same time, his father expects financial support for the extended family. Paabi therefore soon sees only one option: to attempt the potentially fatal journey to Europe a third time.

  9. The scene wih the representatives asking for business ideas and initiatives shows the real tragedy. They have close to no skills, so, what can they do? They want better jobs, but with what skills? The problem remains and becomes their curse when they make it to Europe.

    They are going into the great Unknown with nothing else but hope !
    Their governments do very little for the education of young minds.
    There will be no end to the "migrant' problem.

  16. The village praying for their children rather than thinking hard about their situation and solutions is the problem. The young boy assuming his brothers in Europe are enjoying their life is very sad.

  17. This is the story of the ant and the grasshopper. The ant is making bank with his goat farm. The grasshopper blew it all and is sneaking into Europe again.

  21. Europe is not a solution to Paabi but money management, quitting smoking and starting from scratch are the solution for Paabi. Why did Paabi friend did well with the animals farming than him ? Paabi choices caused him problem.
