Volcano erupts near town of Grindavík in Iceland, threatening houses

A volcano has erupted near the fishing town of Grindavík in south-west Iceland, spewing fountains of molten rock less than a month after a previous eruption in the area.

The latest event began early on Sunday morning, hours after authorities warned evacuated the town. Work had begun to build barriers of earth and rock to prevent lava reaching Grindavík, but it did not appear to have worked.

  1. Volcano erupts near town of Grindavík in Iceland 1600pm 14.1.24 thought they'd already evacuated a month or so ago…? i wonder if the lava flow reached the solitary building stood in it's path… dunno what building it was – a greenhouse or something…

  3. "work had begun to build barriers, but it did not appear to have worked."

What a bunch of bs, if you watch the aftermath right now it worked pretty well. The problem is, a second fissure appeared behind said barrier, right next to the town.

  4. Yeah… Lava's just going to melt those earth/rock barriers and add to the problem. It's like trying to stop a tsunami by throwing water at it.
