Sir Ian McKellen is a GHOST?!! | The Graham Norton Show – BBC

Something odd happened to me. It’s not very funny, but odd happened to me last week. But I’ll just put it in context. You remember the late lamented Michael Gambon? Oh, yes. Who played the other wizard, you know Dumbledore. And I played Gandalf. And we were often mistaken for each other.

And I think he based his make up and beard on mine actually. Anyway, one day, I was going to see him in a show and afterwards I said, do you ever get mistaken for me? He said, oh the whole time! And I said, well, what do you do?

He said, oh they bring me their wretched 10 x 8s of you as Gandalf. I said, what do you do? He said, I just sign your name. With that in the back of your mind. Last week I was waiting for the Docklands Light Railway

To take me back from the West End to home, and a voice behind me said, excuse me. I turn around. There are two young women in their twenties and one of them said, are you Michael Gambon? And I said, Michael Gambon is dead. And she said, yes I know.

But are you Michael Gambon? I said, Michael Gambon is dead! And with that as an exit line I swanned onto to the DLR but she followed! And she was laughing and giggling with her pals. And I think what she was doing was, she was texting her friends saying, I’ve just seen a ghost!

Ian McKellen tells the story of two fans asking him if he was Michael Gambon, even after he told them the actor had died.

Among the guests on Graham’s sofa is knight of the stage and screen Ian McKellen, taking the role of Falstaff in Player Kings, a new version of Shakespeare’s Henry IV plays.

Also, award-winning actor Michael Sheen, talking about his new Welsh BBC drama series The Way, which he also directed, Ambika Mod, starring in the Netflix version of David Nicholls’ romantic bestseller One Day, and top comic Josh Widdicombe.

With music from chart-topper Gabrielle, who performs her single ‘A Place in Your Heart’.
