So, there is no need to play "He said/She said," to placate the media, which in turn can either restate facts, report to satisfy listeners, or completely control the narrative. So, regardless of the exact messages communicated, I suspect that France's response is more about keeping a line of communication open, even if it means you have to deal with, or around, the person at the table.
