Is Russia using North Korean missiles against Ukraine? | In-Live Discussion

as for the United Nations sanctions
monitors the debris from a missile that
landed in the Ukrainian city of kar on
the 2nd of January well that debris
belonged to a North Korean Hong 11
series ballistic missile now as for
Russian State media the report cannot be
considered an expert report it’s not
conclusive is Russia using North Korean
missiles in Ukraine well to discuss this
we are being joined by Glenn dies who’s
a professor of international relations
University of South Eastern Norway Glenn
always a pleasure of speaking with you
now uh Reuters is quoting its sources
and so is Russian State media Reuters
says that you know it did belong that
their sources suggest and they confirm
that the UN sanctions monitors have said
that the missile the debris it belonged
to a North Korean missile Russian State
media says their sources in the UN have
told them that it’s not a conclusive
report if we just look at it on the
basis of diplomatic ties we all
understand Russia and North Korea have
those uh military TI UPS do you feel
Pyongyang is providing missiles to
Russia which it’s using in
Ukraine well I know the Russian media
has contested it and uh obviously I
don’t have the technical expertise to
assess if this is from North Korea and
it’s of of course also difficult to cut
through the fog of War but that being
said I think it’s very likely that
Russia has been sourcing weapons from
North Korea then especially artillery
shells and missiles as well North Korea
is a very militarized country with huge
stock piles it shares a border with
Russia it has friendly relations with
Russia so I guess yeah why would Russia
not Source missiles and shells from
North Korea um as well NATO sending
weapons to Ukraine and it also attempts
to buy all available weapons around the
world so I think Russia is similarly
sourcing weapon so um I I think it’s uh
credible uh although I would like of
course like you to see conclusive
evidence uh again now given the kind of
tie-ups they have it seems likely that
Russia would be using it but if we were
to now just take that as a given that
yes Russia did use North Korean missiles
what does it say about Russia’s war
effort at the moment because now Russia
you know it always comes across as this
military power and it is one but the
fact that it’s having to rely on a a
much smaller neighbor compared to its
own state which is North Korea and it’s
having to use North Korean missiles is
there some kind of a death of weapons
that Russia is perhaps suffering from at
the moment I understand and there are
enough reports to suggest that Russia’s
defense manufacturing has really boomed
over the course of these last two years
plus since their invasion of Ukraine but
why would they have to use North Korean
missiles even if they
are well I think even NATO admits that
Russia is out producing uh all of the
NATO countries combined now so there’s
nothing wrong with their production but
however this has been a very intensive
uh War for more than two years now so uh
obviously getting additional supplies uh
to what extent they rely on them or if
it’s just additional uh I I wouldn’t be
in a position to say uh but also why why
wouldn’t they get from North Korea again
this is uh a neighboring country they
have a lot of weapons uh certainly I
assume if if NATO could access North
Korean shells uh NATO would probably
want to get their on them as well so
it’s um it’s a heavily militarized
country but in this instance it’s a
positive thing for Russia if you want to
go out and buy weapons uh so and again
the shared border also uh is not um yeah
it’s obviously an advantage as well in
terms of uh yeah sourcing weapons uh
Glenn
now there is never just a give it’s
never just a take there’s always a give
and a take when it comes to Russia and
North Korea what’s the give and take
relationship there if Russia is sourcing
those missiles from North Korea what
does North Korea get from Russia I’ll
just like to you know take a recap here
uh a few months ago it was last year
when we saw North Korean leader
kimjongun make his way VIA his train his
armored train to the wasni uh Cosmo
Drome and soon after that I think within
months after that we saw North Korea
finally releasing and the launch of a
the successful launch of a North Korean
satellite after which North Korea shared
the photograph of the White House from
the satellite that they had just
launched now is that what North Korea
gains from Russia what’s the give and
take
there well this doesn’t happen in the
open so it would of course be
speculations but uh i’ what I have what
I’m assuming or at least what I believe
is that uh in the weapon sphere it
appears that Russia is supplying North
Korea with more advanced weapons
Technologies uh satellite techn IES
meanwhile North Korea has a vast amount
of artillery shells and missiles which
it can ship to Russia so there there is
a a weapons trade going on here uh at
least that’s what I assume I can’t prove
any of this but this is what appears to
be the case uh as um uh but but this
also of course stretched into other
areas of the economy as well as uh the
Russians and North Koreans have been
increasing uh or working to increase
their trade for for quite a few years
now if I were to just shift the focus of
uh uh the western side towards the
Eastern side towards North Korea side if
North Korea has its missiles in or
rather if Russia has North Korean
missiles in its Arsenal which are being
fired into Ukraine we all understand
North Korea had its military posturing
given South Korea and US military drills
at North Korea’s doorstep is Russia a
silent partner standing behind North
Korea without announcing it if there is
any kind of a conflict which erupts
which things have been on a boil between
North Korea and South
Korea well I think Russia attempts to
avoid ending up in blocks that is
alliances that is we seen the same in
Middle East they would like to get
closer to Iran but also it wants to get
closer to Saudi Arabia and other Gulf
States so you know it wants to be closer
with China but it also doesn’t want to
alienate India so it avoids this uh
block system which the Americans well in
the NATO has promoted very strongly
after the Cold War and I think the same
applies to the Korean Peninsula uh
Russia has worked very hard to develop
closer relationship with both North and
South Korea indeed what we saw in the
90s when Russia began to distance itself
from North Korea it was actually cut out
from a lot of the Diplomatic
arrangements with South Korea simply
because it lost influence in North Korea
so uh Russia has its new diplomatic
approach around the world now entails
establishing good relations effectively
with both sides so I I I I think it
would be very incorrect to suggest that
Russia’s well is engaging in a military
uh block or Alliance or campaign against
South Korea because uh developing good
economic relations with South Korea has
been a key priority for for Russia but
of course in against as Russia’s now
fighting this proxy war with nato in
Ukraine it will of course accept any
partnership it has now with North Korea
even though it’s a small country it has
huge amounts of weapons so it makes it
an interesting partner uh NATO boss
visited Ukraine just recently and
promises more weapons in the coming days
now if NATO is promising those weapons
to Ukraine and it has us already has the
security Aid bill which has been now
signed into law now do you feel Russia
would also be reaching out more actively
towards its Partners or at least its
friendlies when it comes to the weapons
that it need to use in to continue the
the war effort because it’s in the open
that Iranian drones have been used by
Russia uh We’ve now seen reports of the
Hong 11 ballistic missile debris found
in Ukraine do you feel Russia could
perhaps also be reaching out to China
since more NATO nations would be coming
out in support of
Ukraine uh yeah course this is a very
high intense intense War there’s a huge
amount of Weaponry being used and now
over a long period of time uh but is
also the kind of weapons which are
important I think the it’s mostly
artillery shells it’s drones and it’s
missiles these are the main weapons that
the the Russians are now seeking and
using now in terms of NATO I think the
key problem if even though they’re
assigning more money they’re low on
ammunition and also Ukraine is low on
Manpower and it’s for this reason we see
that NATO and Ukraine are losing this
war against Russia now obviously more
weapons will be sent but I think it’s
also worth focusing on the type of
weapons NATO sending because now it’s
sending more long range missiles and
Washington has also greenlighted
striking deep inside Russian territory
now this is obviously to hit
accumulation of soldiers weapon Depots
logistic centers vital
infrastructure uh but uh but of course
this is the risk that uh this thin line
between a proxy war and a direct war is
slowly being erased so uh I think this
is what Russia will now also seek to
counter so uh but uh this would probably
result in escalation in terms of the war
intensifying even further so probably
Russia opening a new front uh in the
north along kov and Sumi and if this is
the case they will also require much
more weapons as they have a huge Army
built up in the rear which is preparing
to enter the war now in a huge
offensive indeed because the as you
mentioned correctly and I agree with
that it’s what I’m saying that the the
thin line between being a proxy war and
a real war real war in the sense a face
tof face allout front War those lines
are getting blurred very very fast as
things are escalating very well into the
third year of the war now and uh us
elections are around the corner and I
even spoke earlier with a former member
of parliament of former member of
Russian Parliament and he mentioned that
Russia doesn’t need more land it it has
enough land of its own they just don’t
want us forces at its border and Ukraine
is where US forces can enforce their
military might against Russia it won’t
happen throughout the other NATO borders
because they are they are uh democracies
of their own and they will not be
willing to attack Russia like a country
like Finland but Ukraine that’s on Shaky
Ground and that’s where Russia stands on
that so this definitely seems like a war
which is continuing and we are seeing
the third year of it playing out in
front of us uh we will be keeping in
touch as the developments coming that

The debris from a missile that landed in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv on January 2 was from a North Korean Hwasong-11 series ballistic missile. As per Russian state media, the document cannot be considered an expert report as it was prepared by several specialists with a different sphere of expertise. Is Pyongyang providing missiles to Russia? What’s Russia’s give and take relationship with North Korea?

WION’s Shivan Chanana discusses with Glenn Diesen, Professor of International Relations, University of South-Eastern Norway.

  1. Most of Ukraine's weapons are delivered by the US and its cronies, so what is the problem here? O…I forgot, when it concerns Russia the West uses double standards as usual, how hypocritical.

  2. Whats the give & take between Ukraine n USA?

what does Zelensky give to American in return for giving him Hundreds of Billion dollars & Dangerous weapons, missiles, cluster bonbs, drones ?

  3. Finally the Kim missile is no more a toy ? I thought the Americans said itโ€™s a toy ? Well donโ€™t worry itโ€™s still a toy โ€ฆ ๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚๐Ÿ˜‚

  4. So what. I thot the objective of missiles is to explode ๐Ÿ˜‚ why shud we care where its coming from? Or those ones kill and others dont. Everyone is turning into an imbecile

  5. Russia may strike ukraine with North Korean weapons, but Ukraine may not strike back with American weapons? I DON T THINK THATS FAIR…. Ukraine is not a proxy war Ukraine is invaded by Rusdia and had the right to defend itself…… Glenn Diesen is a regulairy spokesman at RT.

  6. First it was "They using Iskander missiles",

Now, "they could be using N Korea missiles". News is ALL FABRICATED NONSENSE and Sensationalism, it's appalling ๐Ÿคฎ๐Ÿšฎ

  7. Ukraine is a good testing gground for testing missiles and bombs. S.Korea testing the accuracy of its missiles. Ukraine is a blessing in disguise for Russia, Iran, China and N.Korea to test their weapons. They are thanking NATO. ๐Ÿคฃ

  8. Is not ok for Russia to use any weapons from anywhere so that they can continue using washing machine chips and shovels. What make more sense is the whole world supplying Ukraine with anything without a but. Call for peace and stop letting Ukrainians to die for nothing.

  9. Ukraine using weapons from all over Europe and America. Whatโ€™s the problem if Russia using weapons from North Korea or China.Russian allies want to test the efficacy and effectiveness of their weapons.

  10. Why is it that the Americans and the West are busy arming their friend Ukraine because of their interests? The same America and West are bullying China and other Russian friends for supporting Russia. Is this not a hypocrisy and selfishness?

  11. Surprised this reporter does not understand that North Korea can get "money" from sending weapons to russian. Money is a viable give and take. You give weapons you get money. It's called "trade".

  12. We already know this, it was never a secret.
NK is supplying them because our out of touch with reality sanctions attempt gave both C and RU no reason to isolate NK anymore…..why is this news?

  13. Why must countries invade other countries in modern times seems working together the world prospers, war solves nothing but innocent people dead on both sides.

  14. The Russians are using North Korean missiles for a beta test, a proof of concept if you will, to show that the missiles work and are effective. The give and take is North Korea is heavily sanctioned and Russia can pay for supplemental arms. They probably pay in food.

  15. Rom 3:23
    For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God;

    Rom 6:23
    For the wages of sin is death;

    Psalms 9:17
The wicked shall be turned into hell, and all the nations that forget God.

    Acts 8:37
And Philip said, If thou believest with all thine heart, thou mayest. And he answered and said, I believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God.

    Rom 10:9
That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

    Corinthians 15:3-4
For I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received, how that Christ died for our sins according to the scriptures; And that he was buried, and that he rose again the third day according to the scriptures:

    Ephesians 2:8-9
For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.

  16. Russian current production is not only for teh Ukraine war but also for the future wars with NATO or for sale to countries unfriendly to NATO. So, using NK weapons is a cheap way to conduct this war.
