Olympic torch arrives in Marseille after 12-day sea journey from Greece • FRANCE 24 English
100 years after the last Olympic games were held in France the torch has touched down on French soil not in the French Capital Paris but here in the southern city of mar after a 12-day voyage from Greece across the Mediterranean Sea on the BM a day of festivities here in marsill and a day of first it’s the first time that the Olympics torture has been welcomed to a host nation has arrived to a host nation by SE it’s also the first time that’s a city other than the official host City that’s of course being Paris has had the honor of being the first to welcome uh the flame and it’s been marked by a day of Pomp and festivities in the southern city of Marseilles starting with a magnificent Maritime parade with the bellm escorted by 1,24 boats along the mar Coastline then the BM made its magnificent and grand entrance here in the Old Port and that’s where the spectacle really began we saw fireworks we heard the mares we heard the Paris 2024 official ampem for the first time and the French national Air Force drew the Olympic iconic Olympic rings into the sky here in Mar and then of course the event the moments everyone had been waiting for the touchdown of the torch Flor manadu had the honor of being the first torch Bearer in France he made his way down a floating uh a floating running track in the water here in Mar he wasn’t alone he was joined by nonata k k a par Olympian and four-time medalist before the French rapper from Mar jeul had the honor of taking the torch and being the first to light the cauldron here in marsill all of this of course marks just the beginning of a very long journey for the Olympic torch across France and its overseas territories finishing of course with that highly anticipated opening ceremony in the French Capital Paris on the 26th of July
Tens of thousands of people gathered Wednesday in the southern French city of Marseille to welcome the Olympic torch and mark another milestone in the lead-up to the Summer Games in Paris. FRANCE 24’s Selina Sykes reports from Marseille.
