to Ukraine next an America’s top Diplomat Secretary of State Anthony blinkin has arrived in the country for an unannounced visit Mr blinkin came in by sleeper train and was greeted by senior officials his visit comes as weapons from a new US Aid package begin arriving at the front line Ukrainian forces are struggling to hold back a major Russian incursion near its second biggest city of harke well let’s go live to ke and our correspondent James wouse so James this un visit from Mr blinken he I understand expected to meet president zelinski yes Mr blinkin is going to get the full rotor call of of uh Ukraine’s top officials he’ll meet with President zilinsky later this afternoon not before having a working lunch with his Ukrainian counterpart dimitro koua and as you say he had the pleasure of the 9h hour sleeper train from Poland it’s the way all officials have to make their way to Ukraine’s Capital with their being a a no fly zone over the whole of the country in these times of War uh and you can be sure what will come up will be the uh gradual arrival of uh this ammunition and weaponry as part of this 61 billion doll package which was unlocked a month ago after a lot of political disagreement uh in Washington uh and you can be sure that Mr blin will uh be told about this continued Russian incursion in the North east of Ukraine which is only Gathering momentum for uh the Russian side we’re told in some areas now around 35,000 troops have now joined that attack and they are looking to take uh more and more Ukrainian territory in that area in this new part of the front line so uh the White House Anthony blinkin is calling this to visit uh it’s a statement of resilience they say and it is a much needed show of support America is uh the biggest military backer of Ukraine by some way so this is a timely visit uh and Ukraine you know we’ll be pointing to what is going on on this part of the front line as a reason for uh the West to continue to support Ukraine as it sees it so a welcome visit he will have a busy day it’s a two-day trip to uh the sunny capital of Ukraine uh and we wait to see what comes out of it I imagine the focus will very much be on the speed of uh the uh delivery of that Western Weaponry yeah just how important are those Us weapons on the front line particularly around hary well we’re told by us officials that uh ammunition has already started to arrive so that means in artillery shells and long range guided missiles or attacks as they are known and Ukraine has used them extensively in the past on Russian supply lines on ammunition depos on command centers uh and you have to look back quite a long way now two years ago when Ukraine was liberating territory last it use those kind of long range strikes to isolate Russian troops and make their presence their occupation unsustainable in some areas so the distant ambition I think for defending troops will be to Simply do that again but I think because of the way things are going in the East and Northeast where you have building Russian momentum at the moment this ammunition can only really be used to just suppress those Russian advances to try and gain some kind of parity which has long been lost and and that is what generals are being upfront about as well as president zalinski the goal with this American Aid is to Simply stay in the fight to stabilize the front line so I think there’s a bit of expectation management going on in Kev in that regard James water house in ke thank you very much indeed and you can get more analysis of Anthony blinken’s visit to Ukraine online from our US state department correspondent Tom baitman who is traveling with the Secretary of State you will find that at bbc.com newws or on the BBC News app

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken is in Ukraine as weapons from a new American aid package begin arriving at the front line.

Blinken, who arrived in Kyiv by sleeper train, is expected to meet President Volodymyr Zelensky and other officials.

The visit comes as the country struggles to hold back a major Russian incursion near its second biggest city of Kharkiv.

The cross-border offensive in Kharkiv region is one of the most significant Russian ground attacks since the start of the war.

  7. As a US citizen I disapprove of aiding the Nazi regime in Kiev that my father fought against. Visit the American cemetery in Normandy and ask yourself what was this all about? We were allies with the Russians back then and should be allies with them now.

  32. Shouldn't America start slowly printing money for the winter. I have a feeling that Ukraine will not do any major offensive and if another winter comes, Ukraine will need generators to produce electricity and gas instead of weapons so that it does not have a winter palace in Kiev.
