Its a perfectly okay thing to ask. I have half the stores where I live who can't do apple pay and half can. My FedEx doesn't even have a chip reader they make you swipe your card still.
a few years ago a woman in Cornwall got grumpy with me because i wanted to make a payment under £10 with a card. She said they didn't do that there was a charge. I haven't heard that in like a decade… i had to borrow cash off someone, since i haven't needed to carry any in years…Maybe i'll try paying with my phone next time…
