The key election words you need to know
swings coalitions and red walls what does it all mean we’re headed for an election so you’re probably hearing political jargon like this everywhere but don’t worry we’re here to tell you what it all means constituency there are 650 of these in the UK they’re geographical areas where people can vote for a member of parliament to represent them in the House of Commons Battleground seats will usually see a lot of campaigning in the run up to an election that’s because one or more of the parties think it’s somewhere they might win or lose they might also be called marginal seats that’s because they were only won by small small margin last election red wall this is a group of constituencies in the north of England and in the Midlands which have historically backed labor in 2019 a lot of them switched to the conservatives instead a swing voter is somebody who’s not bothered about any one party and could vote for any on the day which way they go can be critical to the outcome especially in places where the race is very tight Coalition this is when two or more parties form a government together because no one political party has managed to win a majority of seats in an election just like what happened in 2010 with the Tories and the lib demms
