it is a day of grieving hundreds of people were buried under the deadly landslide in the highlands of Papa New Guinea on the 24th of me these villagers have come to pay their respects those who have lost a loved one paint their faces with Clay as a symbol of mourning the victims were asleep when the mountain collapsed due to heavy [Music] rains I lost my mother my father my wife my three sons only one son was sleeping with me I took his hand and we ran away in this remote Valley the villagers are left to fend for themselves it is now more than a week after the disaster but they continue to look for the victim’s bodies buried under the rubble they dig with any means at hand there was a shop here it’s all buried we are looking for the owners over here there should be around 300 people we found only five bodies the air is thick with tension according to these villagers this digging machine has come too late I’m very hungry to uh bring this machine very close to me while my families and friends and all are buried here why they didn’t came H to rescue us what they think why why are they came here to bring this Miss 9 days later the Army Personnel tried to appease them the government said that the Army will come and help you to clean help recover the bodies clear the roads and here we are some feel that a major Health crisis threatens the survivors people are buried here and it remains Past Dead blood is being swept down there you can really smell it and children are crossing over they will be a big epidemic the search for bodies is likely to last a long time the mountain is still fragile and this could lead to more landslides

Papua New Guinea’s Prime Minister on Friday (May 31) made his first visit to a remote village hit by a deadly landslide last week. The United Nations estimates that 670 villagers died in the disaster, while Papua New Guinea’s government believes the figure to be over 2,000.

  1. Modern technology digging machines/equipments at the site should be available right away to commence sooner the excavation to recoup the deceased bodies. Where is the sympathy when people are using their garden tools and anything their hands can grab to dig the thick debris comprised with huge rocks? In CNN news, it was just disclosed that Australian Government renders to PNG 630 million every year for the Natural disaster Relief Fund. Ontop of that Australia had just given 2.5 million to Mulitaka to prepare and commence the Job on the ground while PNG government can subsidise from 630 million the relief Fund ASAP for recovery and other supplies at a possible convenience. What is going on right now with our government?
