Ukraine’s Zelenskyy in Berlin to seek reconstruction aid

images here of Ukrainian president vomir zalinski arriving in Berlin this morning for a two-day International Summit to drum up support for Ukraine and plan its post-war reconstruction you see here zalinsky being greeted by Germany’s president this is a few hours ago he’s going to hold talks today with German Chancellor Olaf Schultz as well and address the German Parliament the bundes bundestag a little bit later on this morning Abby kugathasan has the very latest detail Heather this two-day conference kicking off today and the Big Goal here is really about securing further support and funding for Ukraine’s recovery and long-term reconstruction so he who’s here heads of government heads of state senior officials from various Nations uh there are also International organizations members of Civil Society groups and the private sector they are looking at launching 95 investment projects to come out of this conference and it’s really all about showing and signaling that Ukraine despite the fact that it’s fighting this war against Russia that it’s reliable for investors to invest in now another major part of this conference is heavy focus on Ukraine’s energy infrastructure as some of our viewers uh may be aware and know Russian attacks on that infrastructure has really been consistent and repeatedly happening over the course of the last few months even play places like the capital are facing ration electricity and power they’re rolling blackouts in other parts of the country and Ukraine has repeatedly asked its Western allies for more ammunition for its air defense systems to intercept those Russian drones and missiles and so this is a big part of that conversation as well we’ve already heard from some major speakers at the conference this morning where president zalinski is in attendance here in Berlin European commission president Ursula underlying speaking today she said that the windfall from some of those Russian frozen assets will be provided to Ukraine in line with international law here’s what she had to say around € 1.5 billion EUR from the windfall profits will become available in July 90% of these funds will go to defense 10% to reconstruction now another major aspect of this conference of course on the top of Mind of many ukrainians is EU accession for Ukraine Olaf Schulz the German Chancellor also speaking this morning said that they will work together with Ukraine to build a stronger and European Ukraine certainly a signal to ukrainians around the world but also to the man in the Kremlin that Berlin’s support is steadfast Heather Olaf Schultz will be having direct talks one-on-one with president zalinski and zalinski is scheduled as well as I was mentioning Abby to speak in the German Parliament in just a few hours time so do we have any details about his message or his ask to German officials what do you know about that yeah president zalanski has addressed German Parliament before but that was through video video link I should say this is the first time he’ll be speaking to German MPS in person we do expect that he’ll thank Germany and German MPS for their ongoing support you know over the last two years Heather you and I have discussed multiple times about the fact that Germany appears to be dragging its feet that was certainly a conversation around those Lepard to tank deliveries that Berlin eventually gave the green light to but despite that narrative uh we do know that Germany is the second biggest donor to Ukraine only behind Washington so we do expect president zalinski to thank Germany for its ongoing support and for co-hosting this conference but again just as he’s been asking other allies he’s certainly expected to ask for even more Aid today that is Abby cugas and thank you very much Abby
