Orbán’s party takes most votes in Hungary’s EU election, but new challenger scores big win

the story of the European elections in Hungary is got two major takeaways the record high turnout 50% participation of Hungarian voters that’s 13 percentage points higher than in 2019 but also the arrival on the scene crucially of a new serious Challenger to the Prime Minister Victor Orban now make Mo no mistake Victor orban’s fides party has emerged victorious in these European elections in his celebration speech his message was clear to the European Union no more migration no more war and no more Brussels clearly hammering home his uh regular campaign themes but any satisfaction for Victor Orban is clearly tainted too by the falling vote share and the dro in the number of MEPS his party will be sending to Brussels just as crucial then is that not far behind really almost snapping at his heels is uh in second place and far ahead of the other opposition groups is the newcomer Peter Maga and his Tissa party now he’s an interesting character Peter magia he’s formerly of fides himself and he burst onto the scene uh only a couple of months ago and he’s campaigned very hard on an anti-corruption ticket he’s struck a cord clearly with voters as he’s toured tirelessly around the country in recent weeks now the dominance though of those two main parties really does condemn all of the other opposition groupings uh the uh socialists the centrists the greens the far right to fighting over the scraps given of course that Victor Orban and Peter magar sh share many political views and values it means that the political landscape here in Hungary and the MEPS that the country will be sending to Brussels as a distinctly right-wing and conservative tone in 2024

“The story of the European elections in Hungary has two major takeaways,” said FRANCE 24’s correspondent in Budapest, Luke Brown. “The record-high turnout – 50% of Hungarian voters – that’s 13 percentage points higher than in 2019, but also the arrival on the scene of a new serious challenger to the Prime Minister Vikor Orban,” he added.
