NATO operation for Ukraine to be located in Germany | DW News

NATO defense ministers have agreed that the alliance will take more of a role in coordinating military aid to Ukraine the decision follows a meeting of the transatlantic Alliance at NATO headquarters in Brussels pledges for bilateral assistance will continue to be organized through a us-led group of some 50 countries NATO will now take over some of the logistics for delivering that support and training NATO head Yen Stenberg says the mission will be headquartered at a US military base in Germany and involve almost 700 staff these efforts do not make NATO a party to the conflict but they will enhance our support to Ukraine to uphold its right to self-defense more on this NATO meeting now from DW correspondent Terry Schulz in Brussels uh Terry this new NATO operation called the security assistance and training for Ukraine will be located in Germany do we know more specifics well as as has been mentioned this will be about 700 people under NATO control NATO command located in v spoten and this is is a new role for NATO it’s the first time that the alliance is is really taking taking more responsibility in facilitating um getting the weapons that have been pledged for Ukraine to to the country and making sure that there’s more training but one of the things I’ll mention off the top is that we’re all sort of stumbling over the name the NATO security assistance and training for Ukraine um because Germany was not willing to let the word Mission be in the title because they thought that might indicate that that NATO would be sending troops into Ukraine which of course is not part of this so now we’re all stuck with calling it ins satu it’s not going to roll off the tongue Terry is there uh also an agreement on the funding of the train Aid no it linked with insu there was not an agreement and the Secretary General was very much hoping he would get that at the same time as they approved this o plan the so-called operation plan uh for the mission and so countries were not willing to agree to his proposal that 40 billion euros be earmarked per year to continue this funding um Italy for example came out and said you know what that’s simply not on our agenda some other countries however were willing have been willing to put their their money where their mouth is among those is is Sweden and we spoke with Swedish Defense Minister Paul Jansen let’s hear him explain Sweden together with the Netherlands and Norway and Denmark has done long long-term Financial commitment and we think that’s good because it provides with the predictability and and stability and it’s an insurance for the ukrainians that we will be with them as long as it takes and we’re hopeful also that uh more countries will follow that path as well and I’m hopeful it’s going to be resolved to uh the Washington Summit and speaking of the Washington Summit and funding there’s also the question of how much NATO allies should spend on their own militaries where is that debate now less than a month before the summit well you know Michael we’re always talking about this 2% of GDP pledge that pledge expires this year it’s been 10 years since allies agreed to the 2% and now many countries want to see that raised to 3% some are saying 2.5 will be enough others are saying it it must be three there’s no agreement on that they would very much like to have a new pledge in place by the Washington Summit but again there are some countries that aren’t even close to 2% yet so whether or not they agree to language promising that they’ll aim to move towards a higher number remains to be seen it doesn’t mean they’ll actually do it and that’s a big problem for the alliance DW correspondent Terry Schultz at the NATO headquarters in Brussels many thanks you

NATO defence ministers have agreed that the alliance will take more of a role in coordinating military aid to Ukraine. The decision follows a meeting of the transatlantic alliance at NATO headquarters in Brussels. Pledges for bilateral assistance will continue to be organized through a U-S led group of some 50 countries. NATO will now take over some of the logistics for delivering that suppor and training. NATO head Jens Stoltenberg says the mission will be headquartered at a US military base in Germany, and involve almost 700 staff.

  1. That's why the neighborhood of Putin's Russia is dangerous for everyone! This is a concentration camp and, like any prison, aggressive, destructive behavior prevails here. Most residents are forced to accept a destructive, gangster model of behavior. Treatment must be radical and long-term!

  2. see the inversion of the US debt yield curve. Only 3 times in history has it been stored for more than 500 days. this happened in 2000, 2008 and 1929. In 1929 there was a maximum of exactly 700 days. The longer the inversion lasts, the deeper and more severe the financial crisis in the world. Now it has lasted for more than 600 days. Soon a crisis will begin that humanity has never seen before. The United States will no longer be able to pay for anything with its unbacked dollars. After this, all proxy wars supported by the USA will end.

  3. "NATO not party to the conflict" just admit it that NATO is a party to the conflict since everyone knows that and sees that. NATO trains Ukranian troops and sending their weapons.

  4. So the new NATO assistance center in Germany (at a U.S. military base no less) will be a new target for Russian hypersonics as it is enhancing Ukraine army in killing Russian soldiers.

  5. What a joke. A bunch of people just wanting a free lunch just sitting around and spouting hot air while actually getting nothing done. Ukraine is doomed because of no true leadership in the free world. We definitely do not have any leadership in the US. We do not have a president with Joe Biden but a Big JOKE to the whole world.

  6. Politicians are the worst. Some basic words are not used by them because they dare not commit to anything because it would indicate that they are actually standing up for something.

Sadly, their jobs seem to be to occupy offices and pleasure themselves socially, academically, militarily and financially while promoting the appearance of doing work.

Real people can't be successful politicians because the public is too easily manipulated.

Ukraine is standing on very shaky help because of the delays and short promises but God bless their work and efforts.

  7. 27 million Russians died at the hands of Germany during World War II and we will never forget!

  8. 'These efforts do not make NATO a party to the conflict..' – Jens Stolts. Er it does make NATO a party and i guess makes Germany a legitimate target.
