Iran presidential election: Reformist to face ultraconservative in runoff • FRANCE 24 English

it’s official one of these two men will be the next Iranian president a reformist lawmaker or an ultra conservative Diplomat massud pesan and S Jal won most votes in Friday’s election none of the candidates won an absolute majority of the votes therefore the first and second candidates with the highest number of votes will be announced to the guardian Council according to the law the runoff will be held next Friday July 5th only 24 million people cast their vote resulting in a 40% turnout the lowest on record since the 1979 Revolution the Two Front Runners were neck and neck but pesan ended up winning most votes a former Health Minister and the only reformist candidate in the race he’s been critical of the actions of Iran’s morality police s Jal who came in close second is a former nuclear negotiator fiercely loyal to Iran’s supreme leader the elections come at a delicate time for the Islamic Republic among the major issues the sanctions hit economy and a Crackdown on political and social Freedom including women’s rights my expectation is that the incoming President should take positive steps for the country that he act in favor of the people in a practical way not just with words but that he act on what he says I think the incoming president will have to improve Foreign Relations the country is also embroiled in escalating tensions with Israel and its Western allies triggered by the war in Gaza in the advancement of Iran’s nuclear program the next president will be the face of the Islamic Republic abroad but the country’s 85-year-old supreme leader has the final say on most matters of State

The sole reformist in Iran’s presidential election, Masoud Pezeshkian, will face the ultraconservative Saeed Jalili in a runoff, authorities said on Saturday, following a vote marred by historically low turnout. Pezeshkian, 69, secured 42.4 percent of the vote, while Jalili, a 58-year-old former nuclear negotiator, came second with 38.6 percent, according to voting figures announced by Mohsen Eslami, spokesman for Iran’s elections authority.
