2024 Westminster election in NI

Some reflections on the election.

Losses but opportunities for unionism.
Sinn Fèin utterly dominant in nationalism.
Similar story as usual for Alliance and the non-aligned parties.

What’s the biggest result of the election for you? While most may say Paisley losing I think the most important result was Robinson retaining his seat (by a larger margin). The DUP having to replace their leader again would have been chaotic.

  1. The biggest result for me was in Lagan Valley. Unionists made a complete balls of it. The DUP should have stood aside for Butler as he’s the local guy. Was going to be hard for Buckley being put in there especially with Donaldson disgracing himself.

Hopefully they can look to North Down and see how they managed to get rid of Farry. Easton got a good comfortable majority in what was supposed to be a tight race. Maybe one of the main Unionist parties could put in a guy like Colonel Tim Collins. lol.

  2. Apart from Lagan valley and north Antrim it seems very status quo for NI.

SF/SDLP need to start convincing moderates of the benefits of a future united Ireland, the nationalist vote share really hasn’t changed much since 1998 but the reasons for wanting to be part of a United Ireland definitely have. The traditional nationalist vote has been exhausted so it’s time for a shift in policy/goals.

Speaking as a methody boy from a nationalist background, basically all of my old school mates have come around heavily to the idea of a United Ireland, I don’t think this phenomenon is exclusive to my Friend group so I think it’s time to start targeting people like this if nationalism wants to start making strides
