  1. They can get in the fucking bin.

My sympathy evaporated during the last round of strikes.

  2. >ScotRail is planning to recruit 160 new drivers every year for the next couple of years.

That doesn’t seem like that much?

What is the actual problem. Is it that we don’t have enough drivers or we don’t have people taking on the overtime? Why is overtime a requirement, just extend their contract hours no?

Since trains in Scotland are now nationalized, hence being paid directly by the public I would expect a bit more scruitnity on why we’re still getting potential strike action.

They start at 43k and earn up to 55k which is more than I think any job, especially as a starting wage. I think Teachers start at 26k.

55k is also above average. Software Developers which are commonly the most overpaid only get about 45k in the public sector…

  3. Standard UK rail problems.

“Traditional in the rail industry for Sunday to be covered by overtime” what absolute madness no other industry can do this as they would be left behind unfortunately this monopoly can continue to take the piss.

  4. The problem is that the union makes the training program so convoluted that only a small number of drivers per year get trained up.

That ensures that there are never enough full-time drivers to cover all the routes during their normal working week.

This means that more lucrative overtime shifts become the norm for any driver that wants them.

Hence a fairly big boost to an already generous salary and pension.

Why would the union want to interfere with that lovely business model for their members?
