Ukraine observes day of mourning after deadly Russian missile strikes | BBC News

hello and a very warm welcome to the program I’m Sally bundock we start with Ukraine President zalinski says that Russia must be held accountable for the massive and deadly bombardment of Ukrainian cities resulting in what he says is now 41 fatalities including three children this is the scene now this morning and following what’s been a really busy night in the capital Kev where rescue workers have been scrambling to try and find any survivors the main Children’s Hospital was largely destroyed with other facilities damaged including a maternity hospital and college five cities across the country have been attacked but Russia has denied targeting civilian infrastructure insisting the strikes had been aimed at military facilities here’s our Ukraine correspondent James Waterhouse frantic desperation on a key of Summer Morning people help with their bare hands at Ukraine’s largest Children’s Hospital even for a warh hardened City this was a missile strike which broke the grueling rhythm of Russia’s Invasion some of the young patients were being treated for cancer already fighting for their lives they illustrate how these attacks don’t discriminate we were in the middle of surgery when the windows got shattered the surgeon quickly covered the baby to save him I want the world to stop this these children are innocent Tatiana had a near Miss we’ve got here 5 minutes before it all started then the search for survivors stops for another missile alert an underpass acts as a shelter this time residential buildings were also hit in Kiev here bodies were recovered other cities were also attacked on a visit to neighboring Poland president ziny promised a retaliation Beyond any doubt we are going to rebuild everything that these terrorists have destroyed and Beyond any doubt we are going to respond to these Savages from Russia everybody who was injured will get the necessary help and we pledge to work on bringing Russia to Justice ukrainians often describe a daily weight on their shoulders sirens sound in cities like K all the time and occasionally explosions will follow and occasionally it’s a big one now you can see people singing as they’re giving out water attacks like this don’t really influence the battlefield but what they are designed to do is terrorize and suppress the Ukrainian people yeah it’s not special operation it’s not the war it’s genocide of population in Ukraine is right now the whole world see how Russian missiles and chemic drones killed Ukrainian citizens our peaceful city is right now the children hospitals will be hitting with from Russian missiles uh we don’t know exactly the numbers of the people who will be killed and injuries right now we saving people from the rubble of the buildings for a second time rescue teams have to find cover because of another air alert only on this occasion they sing the Ukrainian national anthem underground A Dark Day for a city still defined James waterhous BBC News ke let’s go live to ke now and speak to our correspondent there Abdu Jalil abdur rasof uh Abdu Jalil another extremely difficult day for ke tell us what’s happening this morning indeed today it is a day of morning in Kev and the cleanup operation at the Children’s Hospital in other sites that were hit by Russian missiles continued overnight rescue workers tried to clear the debris and remove the uh concrete blocks to see if any people were remaining under the rubble we’re still waiting for official updates but last night president zinski announced that 30 37 people were killed and about 170 were injured during the attack on Monday and he also wrote on social media saying that condolences are not weapons and Ukraine needs to to destroy Russian military Aviation uh in order to prevent such attacks basically meaning that Kei needs long range weapons to attack Russian soil and also president uh Joe Biden has issued a statement condemning this condemning this attack and promising new measures to strengthen Ukraine’s air defense systems and this issue the issue of air defense actually is going to be quite high on the agenda of the NATO Summit that is taking place today in Washington and the attack that happened last uh yesterday it happened uh uh during the daytime and Russia launched uh about 40 missiles and according to ke eight of them were not intercepted basically Ukraine’s air defense systems were simply overwhelmed and therefore it is likely that president zinski is going to request more weapons more systems like Patriot air defense systems in order to defend the Ukrainian cities now many of the children in that hospital which is Ukraine’s biggest pediatric facility were receiving Critical Care uh what provision is for those children now yes they were about 700 patients uh at that hospital prior to the attack and most of them were evacuated to other facilities other medical facilities in KF and around the region and we know that uh some of the children were uh injured and the fact is that one of the worst affected uh parts of that building was the department uh where children were getting a dialysis treatment and many of those children were simply in the middle of their treatment some of them were actually in the the in the uh surgery room when the attack happened and we heard uh doctors and nurses saying that the the medical staff had to save not just their own lives but also the lives of their patients they had to cover the bodies of those uh children and try to take them to safety okay Abdu Jalil thank you for now our correspondent in ke well the war in Ukraine is going to dominate The Talks at this year’s NATO Summit which as you were just hearing there it kicks off later today in Washington President Biden will host world leaders in the US capital as the military Alliance marks its 75th Anniversary Biden has called The Alliance the most unified it’s ever been but the rise of the farri in some European countries and the prospect of a second Trump presidency is Raising concerns support for the alliance may not last in the coming years particularly on Military Aid which its members send to Ukraine president vadir zalinski will be in attendance this year and is expected to stress to NATO allies that more support is needed to strengthen his country’s air defenses against Russia’s assault well for more here’s our defense correspondent Jonathan Beal who is in Washington Yen Stenberg the head of NATO has managed to get allies to commit to spending another 40 billion that’s 30 billion $40 billion on Ukraine’s military support for the next year what he hasn’t been able to do is to turn that into a five-year commitment what’s been called Trump proofing that military support and that is because of the political uncertainties he has strong support from Kama this will be his first big test the British prime minister on the international stage he’s made clear NATO will remain a Cornerstone for Britain’s security and he wants to speed up military aid to Ukraine but the questioning in the head of many leaders here is while yes they’re expected to show Unity on Ukraine will it be the same next year especially if Donald Trump a past critic of the alliance a Critic of giving weapons to Ukraine is elected a second term that is the elephant in the room Jonathan Beal there were for analysis I was speaking to Matthew KCK who’s vice president senior director of the Atlantic council’s skcraft Center for strategy and security about how Europe’s changing political landscape could impact the discussions at this NATO Summit a lot of uncertainty with a new government coming to power in the UK uh recent elections in um France but but again the alliance is 75 years old uh the members are all democracies we’ve seen a lot of political change and and I guess I just think the uh factors bringing the alliance together the threat from Russia are are are strong enough to uh keep the alliance uh strong and so I think the the Big Challenge we’re facing are are do we have the right defenses to deal with the threat from Russia um China and working with Indo Pacific Partners is going to be another priority for the alliance at the summit the so-called ip4 uh Japan South Korea Australia New Zealand are planning to attend uh the plans for Ukraine uh there’s not the political will right now to give Ukraine uh immediate uh invitation for membership but they are planning a bridge to Nato uh for Ukraine uh and then burden sharing uh is is an issue that’s going to be discussed again 23 allies hitting their 2% defense spending Target but others are not quite there and in fact um some of the estimates um I’m seeing suggest that 2% isn’t going to be enough for NATO to implement its defense plans uh we’re probably going to have to look at more like 3 to 4% spending for the Allies to get the capabilities the alliance needs

A day of mourning is being observed in Ukraine after one of the worst waves of Russian missile strikes in months, with at least 41 people killed and 166 injured.

The main children’s hospital in the capital Kyiv was among buildings hit in cities across the country on Monday.

Russia denied targeting the Kyiv hospital, saying it had been hit by fragments of a Ukrainian air defence missile, while Ukraine said it had found remnants of a Russian cruise missile.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called the attack “brutal” and described his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin as a “bloody criminal”.

  1. Consult impartial militarysummary.
It's more likely the hospital was either hit by a damaged incoming missile or a rogue anti-aircraft missile. Pictures showed a sharp nosed missile indicating the later.
Of course media will use the event to follow their narratives.
Whenever anti-aircraft missiles are embedded in civilian areas accidents will happen. Also the Patriot missile system is very unreliable. Last year one such system, set to 'automatic' ' shot off all it's missiles at once, some returning to sender.

  2. “All the Kinzhal missiles launched at the Ukrainian capital since the deployment of Patriot systems was announced were successfully stopped. Not a single ballistic missile since May 2023 reached its target in the capital,” Colonel Sergey Yaryomenko, commander of the 96th air defense brigade, told the Ukrinform news outlet.

  3. The Artyom plant which is a legit military target was the target. There's one video of a Ukrainian man recording the moment of the impacts and he clearly says "they're attacking the Artyom plant". The hospital was as the good Americans would say "Collateral Damage".

  4. Children, parents and medical personnel are taking the risks in Ukraine while western politicians are???and NATO??? Shall we discuss priorities…give Ukraine their air shield not platitudes.

  5. So Palestine a not considered 😅Bcs a they a Arabs…………..and bcs NATO waits nothing in it………..or if Ukraine was e one did it ….will it b bad still…….

  6. Trolls need to realize that there is NO conspiracy here, no Ukrainian error, or any other nonsensical Russian claim. The fact-based evidence is there, and the world will see it. Lying through your teeth changes NOTHING.

  7. Zelensky didn't try to prevent the conflict through diplomacy because he lacks honor and integrity.

In 2014 there was a coup. Soon after, there was a massacre in Odessa (dozens of people were burned alive). Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed. A civil war broke out due to the rise in ethnic tensions. For 8 years the Ukrainian military was indiscriminately shelling civilians living in Donbas.

If Zelensky honored the Minsk agreement and pledged neutrality, none of this would have happened. The 8 year civil war would have ended and Donbas would have remained part of Ukraine. War is the ultimate failure of diplomacy.

Zelensky, Poroshenko, Merkel and Hollande admitted that Ukraine had no intention to honor the Minsk agreements.

Who didn't want peace? Who advised against the 2022 peace talks in April? Hint: someone visited Zelensky in Kiev at that time.

Russia's national security was compromised once NATO began to expand eastwards. Russia clearly stated that Ukraine joining NATO was a red line (November 2021) and unfortunately this concern was never taken seriously. The Russians openly stated: if nothing changes, we will be forced to act in order to defend our national security. Enhancing the national security of one country at the expense of another is unacceptable. The Russians have legitimate security concerns.

20th September, 2021: Ukraine launched military drills with US and NATO.

NATO is not a defensive alliance. NATO illegally bombed Yugoslavia (a direct violation of the U.N. Charter).
We should never forget what they did to Libya, Afghanistan, Iraq etc.

Who blew up the pipeline causing an environmental disaster?

Zelensky banned all opposition and arrested a leading priest.

Zelensky tried to invoke article 5 under false pretenses. Remember the incident in Poland.

Ethnic Russians living in Ukraine were treated as subhuman. Their language and culture was being oppressed.
Poroshenko said, “Our children will go to schools and kindergartens—theirs will hide in the basements”.

Russians will never forget the 2014 Odessa massacre. The whole world needs to know about it.

Why was Denis Kireev eliminated? He was a member of Ukraine's negotiating team during the peace negotiations. He wanted to help his country.

Ukraine has a hit list. They target artists, journalists and ordinary citizens. Hundreds of children are on this list. 13 year old Faina Savenkova was placed on this list.
Pink Floyd's Roger Waters is on this list. Jimmy Dore (American stand-up comedian, podcaster) and Aaron Maté (Canadian writer and journalist) are on this list.

There is evidence that Ukrainian troops have been indiscriminately shelling civilians in Donbas (they used petal mines and targeted areas where there was no military presence).

The azov troops trapped in the azovstal steelworks in Mariupol used human shields. They refused to allow civilians to leave despite of humanitarian corridors being present.
Russia held a proposed cease fire in order for the civilians to leave, but azov would not allow the civilians to leave.

Ukraine has committed many acts of terrorism (car bombs and other forms of assassination). Darya Dugina (journalist) R.I.P.

The first terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed the truck driver and the individuals in the adjacent car (innocent civilian victims).
The second terrorist attack on the Kerch bridge killed two parents and severely injured their young daughter.

I have done a lot of research and it took me a long time to write this comment. I have stated a lot of facts and I have given my honest opinion.
I have provided a brief summary of events that took place. In order to explain this whole situation in great detail, a book would need to be written.
Hopefully someone will write an UNBIASED book, stating facts and allowing the readers to form their own judgments. Everything I said can be fact checked and verified….

  8. Departpartment Of Irish Agriculture (DOIA Derry)
Due to cutbacks Ireland will be redirecting It's multi billion euro agriculture resources to those whom actually need it, the UK can expect heavy loses of resources as the department restructures, we apologise for any inconvenience this may cause.

  9. How many billions will these countries give. Elections show the number of people who don't want to send more are glowing more and more. 😮

  10. Our leaders are always reacting when the damage is done instead of being proactive. That is a clear sign of absence of leadership and planning, unfortunately. Show some backbone!
