US Abrams dominates in the battlefield in Ukraine, Russia’s tanks are powerless against it

Ukraine is operating a small fleet of US-made Abrams tanks, combat-proven vehicles that were built to destroy Russian armor.

The war in Ukraine hasn’t really featured the kind of tank-on-tank engagements that the M1A1 Abrams was designed to win, according to Business Insider. And instead of leading massive armored breakthroughs, another function they were built to carry out, these tanks are primarily being used in more of a supporting role.

But a Ukrainian tank commander said the Abrams was still a dominant tank on the battlefield — better than the Soviet-era ones Kyiv fielded at the start of the war and even Russia’s top and most celebrated tanks.

“It’s better than T-72, T-62, and even Russian T-90,” the commander, who goes by the call sign Zakon, said through a translator during a recent interview with Business Insider from an undisclosed location near the front lines in eastern Ukraine.

The US initially planned to send Ukraine the newer M1A2 variant but decided to send the older M1A1s, tanks that run $10 million a unit, to speed up the delivery process. Kyiv received all 31 Abrams in the fall, and they’re now in service with the seasoned 47th Mechanized Brigade. Zakon commands one tank and oversees a crew that consists of a driver, a loader, and a gunner.

He said the M1A1, even though it’s an older model of the Abrams that has been the main US battle tank for decades, was twice as good as Russia’s T-90. “It’s like a mouse against a big cat, if we compare these tanks,” he told Business Insider.

Russia has fielded multiple variants of the T-90, a main battle tank in service since the early 1990s. The newest — and most technologically advanced — is the T-90M, which Russian President Vladimir Putin once claimed was the “world’s best tank.”

  3. $300 drones dominate in Ukraine. Why are we sending million dollar tanks. I know that's a drop in the bucket to the 60 billion. Couldn't that money be used here to help homeless vets and others? IT"S NOT OUR WAR.

  8. Смотрел русские новости, они там все побеждают, сбывают каждую неделю по 3 самолета в общей суме сбили почти 700, только в Украине было только 70 рабочих истребителей, ну там дали еще самолетов 30-40 максимум, но для не 700 самолетов, там на РФ тотальная брехня.

    Я думаю что РФ уничтожила украинских самолетов где то 50 штук.

  16. What a nonsense. Abrams have all kind of problems, bridges cannot support weight, maintenance and repairs too complicated and they were for most part kept away from the front because the results were too embarrassing.

  17. How is the M1 dominating the battlefield when 1) it is a token force, and 2) tanks are not the dominant force at all in Ukraine? It is artillery and drones that dominate in Ukraine.

    Let me remind you of a few things about Putin's war….

    1. Let's begin with Black Sea Fleet losses:

    • 5 Raptor-class patrol boats — On 22 March 2022, a video appeared of a Raptor-class patrol boat being hit and damaged by an anti-tank guided missile. According to Russian sources, it had to be towed away afterwards.[25] On the first week of May 2022, Ukrainian forces using Bayraktar TB2 drones attacked four Raptor-class boats (in addition to one BK-16 high speed assault boat, mentioned below) near Snake Island. The extent of the damage was not initially known,[26][27][28] but it emerged that three boats were destroyed[29] while one of the Raptor boats withstood the damage and was filmed in Sevastopol for repairs.[30]

    • Saratov — On 24 March 2022, a Russian Navy Alligator-class landing ship that was docked in Berdiansk, Ukraine, caught fire. The Ukrainian military claimed that they had hit it, that it was destroyed and that it was the Orsk.[31] Later the General Staff of the Ukrainian Armed Forces claimed that Saratov had been destroyed.[32] Two other Russian ships, the Caesar Kunikov, and the Novocherkassk, that were docked nearby sailed away, with fire and smoke billowing out of one.[33][34][35] On 2 July 2022, Russian official said the ship was scuttled back in March by its own crew in order "to prevent detonation of the on-board munitions by the fire that had started" due to a Tochka-U ballistic missile that hit the port. The Saratov was subsequently salvaged and was to be towed to Kerch, Crimea.[36] • Moskva — On 13 April 2022, two Ukrainian officials said that the Slava-class cruiser had been hit by Ukrainian Neptune anti-ship missiles and was on fire in heavy seas. The Russian Ministry of Defense said the ship was seriously damaged after a fire caused a munitions explosion. The next day, Russian officials said that the ship had sunk while being towed to port.[37] • BK-16 high-speed assault boat — In the first week of May 2022, a video appeared of a Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 drone hitting and sinking a high-speed assault boat near Snake Island.[29] The wreck was later recovered.[38] • Serna-class landing craft — On 7 May 2022, a video appeared of a Ukrainian Bayraktar TB2 drone hitting and sinking a landing craft on Snake Island.[39][40] • Veliky Ustyug — On 17 June 2022, a photo emerged of the ship being towed on the Volga River in a damaged state. The Buyan-M-class corvette had participated in the 2022 Russian invasion of Ukraine.[41][42] • Vasily Bekh — On 17 June 2022, Ukraine claimed to have sunk the rescue tug (Russian: Спасатель, "Spasatel") Vasily Bekh with two Harpoon missiles causing it to sink shortly thereafter.[43] Shortly after the sinking, on 21 June, British military intelligence confirmed the attack, stating that the vessel sunk was almost certainly Vasily Bekh.[44] • Ivan Golubets — On 29 October 2022, Ukrainian forces used an Unmanned Aerial and Submarine Vehicle to strike Russian forces in Sevastopol, Crimea. According to Russia, Ukrainian UAVs slightly damaged the Natya-class minesweeper.[45] • Yury Ivanov-class intelligence ship Ivan Khurs possibly damaged by one of three Ukrainian sea drones on 24 May 2023.[46] • Olenegorsky Gornyak — On 4 August 2023, near the Port of Novorossiysk a Project 775 Ropucha-class landing ship was seriously damaged by a joint effort of the Ukrainian SBU and the Ukrainian Navy, possibly using a sea drone, and towed to port by the Russian Navy. Following the attack the Ukrainian Navy reported Russian ships leaving port and to some extent dispersing in the Black Sea.[47] • Rostov-on-Don and Minsk — On 13 September 2023, a submarine and landing ship were attacked by Ukrainian Su-24s armed with Storm Shadow missiles, visibly destroying the Minsk landing ship following a nighttime raid on Sevastopol. The Kilo-class submarine was damaged beyond economic repair according to a military analyst.[48] However, the Russian government stated they would repair both ships and return them to full operational status.[49] • Askold (ru) — On 4 November 2023, Ukrainian forces struck Zalyv Shipbuilding yard in Russian-occupied Kerch, Crimea, with cruise missiles, damaging the relatively new Karakurt-class corvette Askold, which carries Kalibur cruise missiles.[50] On 6 November 2023 president Zelensky stated that the ship was destroyed.[51]

    2. RuZZian Casualties – estimates run from 350,000 to 500,000. A further 500,000 young males have fled the country to avoid being conscripted.

    3. NATO membership has increased as nations fearing RuZZian aggression seek safety in numbers.

    4. RuZZia has become a pariah state, joining the likes of North Korea, Iran, and Communist China as the most despised regimes in the world.

    5. RuZZia's economy has suffered. Between February 2022 and February 2023 alone revenue from oil exports declined more than 41%. €300 billion of Russian Central Bank reserves are blocked. 70% of assets of the Russian banking system are under sanctions. Around €20 billion of assets of more than 1,500 sanctioned persons and entities have been frozen. That's only a small sampling.

    So if you claim Putin is winning this war you must like watching the population and wealth of the Russian Federation squandered in a fool's gambit to restore a long lost empire.

Keep reading about Russia's flash in the pan upgrade and you'll see, "Growth in Russia is projected to slow to 1.3 percent in 2024, and then to 0.9 percent in 2025." If Russia is such a great economy why were RuZZian soldiers stealing toilets from Ukrainians?

    Do you not realize H1tler did the same thing in the 1930s?! He was hailed for boosting the economy of Nazi Germany, but it was almost entirely based on military spending. Any dictator can do that, but eventually it burns itself out as their people cannot eat artillery shells. Wise up, get out of Ukraine, and figure out how to build a real economy.

  41. Of course our tanks are better than Russia's ! They have almost ALWAYS been!! Perhaps in WWII they had one better than ours, but it was an American design that the idots in the Pentagon rejected over the Sherman. Soviet and Russian strategy has always been to overwhelm by numbers if they couldn't match our technology. That's how they beat the better German tanks in WWII.

  42. Um…real answer on training dogs. Leash training starts with no leash, and food in your hand. Teach the puppy to stay at your calf without a leash, one kibble at a time (every few feet).
