In 1997, TV presenter Alain de Cadanet asked pilot Ray Hanna to do a low pass in his Spitfire as he spoke to camera (NSFW language)

  1. The pilot in this video used to be Red 1, team leader of the Royal Air Force Aerobatic Team – The Red Arrows. He was responsible for increasing the flying formation from seven to nine jets, and introduced the iconic Diamond 9 formation the team still uses to this day. Coincidentally, the team are currently celebrating their Diamond Anniversary (60 years).

The formation of 9 jets is split into two groups. The front group of 5 is named ‘Enid’, after Enid Blyton – author of the children’s book series ‘The Famous Five’. The rear group of 4 jets is named ‘Hanna’, after Ray Hanna, seen here flying the Spitfire in this video.

  2. My uncle died doing a low flypast for a bbc documentary on RAF phantoms in Germany. He did one, they asked him to do it again but lower. He died on that second run.

  3. Ray Hanna also did a low flyby of the pitlane at one of the Goodwood Revival meetings (possibly the first?) which was so low it was below the grandstands and surrounding buildings.
