  1. Australian news scrambling for negative spin on today’s performance by the United States

  2. That’s the first gold medal that the U.S. has *ever* won in a team fencing event. Finally got there after 128 years of trying.

They did it the hard way, too–upsetting Italy in a truly incredible gold medal match.

Absolutely huge for U.S. fencing, especially when you take Kiefer and Scruggs’ gold/silver in the individual event into account.

U.S. men’s foil has a solid shot at gold this weekend as well!

  3. Upvote for referring to the number of golds as opposed to the total number of medals as the sorting criteria for the medal table.

  4. I can’t figure out how US went from 3 golds to 9 overnight. Was Ledecky’s 1500m the 3rd gold (along with womens all-around gymnastics and mens 4×100 free) or the 5th? Overnight the Americans won one gold each in rowing, gymnastics, fencing, and swimming. Which two golds am I missing?

  5. hot take: team fencing should be done in lanes, simultaneously. each fencer can make attacks on their own lane, but also the lanes to the left and right. I wanna see more TEAM team sports!!
