The IOC speaks

  1. and to clarify, Algeria is extremely anti gay and trans. She would not be able to medically transition, and her passport would list her birth sex

  2. First, this is not like the situation of Lia Thomas. This appears to be an intersex condition, in which one’s biology may turn out to contain both male and female elements. In the case of Imane Khelif, this might never have been discovered had she not become an elite boxer, just as if Caster Semenya had not excelled at running. The use of the term “trans” here is very loose language at best, misleading at worst.

Second, it Is not an unreasonable position to take that if a person has male chromosomes, experienced puberty with male testosterone levels, and gained the benefits of that testosterone*, then that person should participate in sports as male—and several Olympic sports have essentially adopted that standard. This is not a matter of punishment, but of fairness.

*Thinking of Dulee/Dutee? Chand here, a runner from India, who had high testosterone levels, but whose body could not do anything with it.

Third, this has become inflamed for multiple reasons. First, it’s boxing. Second, it’s boxing. More seriously, first, it’s a sport where the physical differences can be life-threatening. Second, due to all the kerfuffles among governing bodies, eligibility rules in boxing have been frozen in their 2016 form, before anyone had seriously thought about this.

Finally, the very careful attempts by all involved to not release private medical information, while commendable in themselves, have led to an atmosphere where partisans on all sides assume coverups and bad faith by the other.

  3. >the gender and age of the athletes are based on their passport.

I don’t care what side you are on in this particular case of the Algerian boxer, but having someone’s eligibility based on the gender they have on their passport is insane work. Women sports is in for some disruption

  4. The folks who started all this nonsense don’t give a shit about the truth. They don’t care that they’re wrong about this woman. They’ll just move on to the next awful thing and pretend like this awful thing didn’t happen.

  5. Gosh the toxic energy and vibes with these games is disappointing but the pure hate and disinformation is an entire different level.

  6. A lot of people here are extremely naive. I wouldnt trust the IOC for a second after everything we’ve learned over the years.

  7. Imagine thinking the IOC is trustworthy. Disgusting that person was allowed to even complete.

Ah shit forgot this was reddit where people like the child groomers

  8. I’ve been disgusted by all the bigots I’ve seen on social media rally around this with excitement, spreading misinformation that a biological man beat up a woman in the Olympics.

  9. the pr spin on this supposedly “biologically male” athlete has to be one of the craziest psyops ever! how can people say she’s a biological male if she is in fact born with female genitals?

also, high testosterone level =/= biological man. it’s a chromosomal disorder

  10. I feel so bad for the boxers dealing with these horrible baseless attacks. Glad and shocked the IOC made a public statement about it defending them.

  11. What you mean the IOC has incredibly strict rules about this and has systems in place and already had the situation sorted… Much to the shigrin of the neo-nazi, chuds who didn’t pass basics biology. Colour me fucking shocked
