Protecting the climate – How the human brain prevents us from saving the world | DW Documentary

Can the climate still be saved? Scientists like oceanologist Mojib Latif are disillusioned. Neither the warnings from climate researchers nor public protests have prompted sufficient action from politicians and big business interests.

Why? This question is the subject of this film. One factor is the sluggish political action of governments in almost every country in the world — despite numerous climate protection conferences. The lack of political action can often be traced to large fossil fuel companies, which have prevented the implementation of effective environmental and climate protection measures, fearing for their profit margins.

For some time now, young people have also been fighting for radical change. Against ruthless companies and politicians who are incapable of acting, in their view. “Fridays for Future” and “The Last Generation” want to see an immediate change of course. Mojib Latif sympathizes with their concerns. But he wonders what their forms of protest, which he finds too radical, really achieve. In large parts of society, they tend to provoke anger, which can serve to increase society‘s lack of understanding. Have there ever been successful forms of protest? Perhaps other approaches are needed to convince people.

Ultimately, however, each individual person — and their human brain – may be at the root of the problem. Why? Solving complex problems in the long term is not the human brain’s strongpoint, says neuroscientist Henning Beck. “The structure of our brain negatively influences our behavior when tackling big problems.”

In this documentary, numerous voices from the world of science weigh in, analyzing the ‘climate protection problem’ from different perspectives. During the documentary, it becomes clear why scientific educational work has not led to sufficient climate protection despite the clarity of the situation. The film shows which hurdles still need to be overcome — economic and political, as well as very human ones – and how science can help.

  1. Considering the actual cause and the lies behind it, it would be better if they launched the thermo nuclear weapons and ended the exploitation right now. If we destroy society only after we have completely destroyed the environment, the survivors will starve. Look at these leaders you listen to, look at what they have done.

  3. Until the ultra rich accept and understand they are going to loose everything they value (wealth and power), we will struggle to change course.

  4. I read that more people die from cold every year than excess heat. 9 to 1 ratio. In Canada I have been frozen at -35 C for 68 years , so I am glad the winters are now 1 month shorter. Canada will benefit if the temperature rises. We will be able to grow two crops. The governments should get used to the idea that the seas will rise and encourage building on high ground and buying up land that will be flooded and preventing people from building there. Miami and Florida will be flooded , so get used to the idea.
Start figuring out how to give the vegetation a hand to move North at a faster rate.

  5. … illuminati u postindustri err@ a real lost one for all eko sistems All around earth I see private satellites who are doing nothing, but I their part is over, programs shut down but pollution will go on. Not even their makers know, but or care about consequences because of that.

  7. It's not just the big corporations that deserve the blame, the nr.1 co2 emitter is the meat industry. So instead of buying a tesla, you should stop eating meat.
